Rushing star Robinson honored for 150-yard day

March 28, 2006 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

FRANKFURT Galaxy rusher ROGER ROBINSON has been named NFL Europe Offensive Player of the Week following his outstanding display while leading his team to victory over the Hamburg Sea Devils on Saturday night.

Robinson, allocated by the Arizona Cardinals, gained 150 yards on 23 carries (6.5-yard average) and scored on a 34-yard run during Frankfurt's 31-14 win. The speedy halfback also added 3 receptions for 26 yards.

After two weeks of action, Robinson has a 99-yard lead over his nearest rival at the top of the NFLEL rushing charts having gained 253 yards on 49 carries (5.2-yard average). He also leads the league in combined yards from scrimmage with 279 (253 rushing, 26 receiving).

Robinson said: "It feels good to be leading the league in rushing right now, but it's early. We're only two games into it and we have eight to go. If I'm on top after Week 10, then I'll feel real good."

Green Bay Packers-allocated cornerback THERRIAN FONTENOT was named Defensive Player of the Week after he helped the league-leading Rhein Fire defense shut out the Berlin Thunder en route to a 22-0 victory.

Fontenot recorded 3 tackles, 3 passes defended and 2 interceptions, with the first crucial pick coming in his own end zone at the start of the second half. His second interception at Berlin's 41-yard line was returned 10 yards and set up the Fire's final touchdown of the game, giving the visitors a 19-0 advantage.

Through two games, Fontenot jointly leads NFL Europe with 2 interceptions and leads the Fire with 4 passes broken up.

Special Teams Player of the Week honors went to Amsterdam Admirals cornerback JUSTIN PERKINS, whose 72-yard return of a blocked field goal for a touchdown helped his team to a 20-15 victory over the Cologne Centurions.

Perkins, of the Kansas City Chiefs, also recorded 2 special teams tackles, 5 defensive stops and 2 passes defended as the Admirals evened their record at 1-1.

English wide receiver SCOTT McCREADY was named National Player of the Week for his efforts during the Hamburg Sea Devils' 31-14 defeat at the hands of the Frankfurt Galaxy.

McCready caught a team-high 8 passes for 95 yards and became just the third player in NFLEL history to top 150 career receptions, taking his total to 151 - good enough for joint-second place in the all-time rankings alongside former Barcelona Dragons tight end Demetrius Davis (1991-1992, 1995-1996).

McCready also broke Hamburg's all-time receptions mark, taking his total in a Sea Devils uniform to 47, surpassing the mark of 42 set by Chris Collins in 2005.

The former New England Patriots wide receiver won three Player of the Week awards in 2005.
