Edmonton Rush News Release
Edmonton, AB--The Edmonton Rush are getting their 2009 National Lacrosse League season under way early with the start of training camp this weekend at the Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho.
Thirty-nine players have made the trip along with the Rush coaching staff - all with the desire to lead the club to its first playoff berth in franchise history when the season officially launches in January.
The opportunity to have the first stage of training camp on the road is important for several reasons, not the least of which is a chance for the players to bond early on in the year as they strive for success. The camp will include an intrasquad game that will be open to the public. Game time is 7:10 p.m. Friday night.
"We have a strong nucleus of talented players and we have injected the roster this year with some new faces who will bring us more speed, scoring ability and toughness which are all assets we will need against the NLL's best teams," said Rush Team President Duane Vienneau.
"Plus this training camp road trip allows us and the National Lacrosse League to expose our great game to a new fan base which could potentially lead to an expansion franchise for the City of Boise. We are looking forward to showcasing our players and the game of lacrosse."
Among the returning players heading to training camp is second-year Rush Captain Chris McElroy, fellow transition player Ian Hawksbee who set a club record last year in loose ball collection, last season's leading scorer Mike Hominuck, and original Rush member and Edmonton product Jimmy Quinlan.
Bob Hamley, GM/Head Coach of the Rush, made several off-season moves in order to improve the club and many of the newcomers will see their first action in Rush colors this weekend.
Among the new players are veteran NLL enforcers Tim O'Brien and Ryan McNish, 2008 NLL All-Star Andy Secore, goaltenders Steve Dietrich, Chris Levis and Brandon Atherton, and 2008 first-round draft picks Jamie Floris and Ryan Campbell.
"Every roster spot is open and available so I expect that each player has come to camp ready to compete and show what they can bring to the Rush," added Hamley.
