Abilene Ruff Riders News Release
KATY, TX - Katy wideout Se'e Poumele took and pitch from quarterback Albert Higgs and connected with fellow wideout Darrick Wallace streaking down the sideline for a 21-yard touchdown pass with just over three minutes to play that gave the Katy Ruff Riders enough of a cushion to hang on for a 49-41 victory over the visiting Centex Barracudas (1-5) Saturday night at the Merrell Center. The win improved Katy's record to 4-1 and gave them their fourth consecutive triumph and third in a row at their home arena. The Ruff Riders hit the road for their next three games, beginning next Saturday night in Anchorage, Alaska when they take on the Alaska Wild.
The Barracudas kept the game close all night and trailed 22-13 at the half. Katy was able to increase their lead to 35-20 near the end of the third period before Centex began closing the gap. In a game filled with penalties, Barracudas quarterback Wayne Johnson completed 16 of 32 pass atempts for 230 yards and four touchdowns, while Higgs went 18 of 25 for 203 yards and racked up four TD's as well.
In the final stanza, Centex was able to tie the score at 35-35 with seven minutes to play. But Higgs found Poumele deep over the middle for a 37-yard score on the very next play from scrimmage following the kickoff, to put Katy back on top. Centex then went back down the field again and Johnson pushed the ball across the goal from three yards out. The touchdown would have tied the game again, but the Barracudas bobbled a bad snap on the extra point attempt, and kicker Kyle Robinson missed the try, giving the Ruff Riders a 42-41 lead with five minutes to play.
Barracudas wideout Quintin Lankford led all recievers in the game with nine catches for 117 yards and two TD's, while Centex's Olan Coleman totaled 101 yards on five receptions. Wallace increased his Ruff Riders leading touchdown total to nine, with three scores on the night, and Sammy Knight added 74 yards and a score as well.
