Ruff Riders improve to 3-1 with 41-20 comeback win over San Angelo

KATY, TX - Trailing 20-9 midway through the third quarter, the Katy Ruff Riders scored the final 32 points of the game and improved their record to 3-1 on the season with a 41-20 triumph over the visiting San Angelo Stampede-Express (1-3) Saturday night at the Merrell Center. All ticket proceeds from the game are being donated to the victims of last week's tornado that devasted the town of Greensburg, Kansas.
After turning the ball over four times in the first half, Katy trailed 13-9 at the break. San Angelo's Adrian Perez caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Stampede quarterback Zack Wilson to put the Ruff Riders in an 11-point deficit. But that's when Katy quarterback Albert Higgs and his arsenal went to work. After Ruff Riders kicker Darren Brown connected on a 35-yard field goal, the defense stopped San Angelo on their next possession, and Carlos Alsup found the end zone on a 7-yard run. Sammy Knight then caught a two-point conversion pass to tie the score at 20-20 after three quarters.
In the final stanza, the Ruff Riders defense held again, and Higgs quickly found wideout Clay Woodard for a 32-yard strike to give Katy the lead for good. A reverse, end around 42-yard scamper by Darrick Wallace with 10 minutes to play gave the Ruff Riders a two-score margin, and Woodard added another TD with just under a minute to play.
Higgs completed 12 of 30 passes for 147 yards, but was picked off twice. The Ruff Riders defense did a number on Wilson, as they held the Stampede's slinger to just 61 yards passing on the night. Woodard totaled 84 yards receiving on five receptions, while Knight caught five for 55 yards.
