Roots Keep Pace in Playoff Chase with Clean Sheet in Las Vegas
September 9, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release
Roots travelled to Las Vegas for the second time in less than a month for a Wednesday night matchup with Lights FC for the final stop of their two game road trip before a four game homestand over the next two weeks. With a temperature of 107 degrees at kickoff, the team took their time getting settled into the game. Johnny Rodriguez got his first start of the season at forward and Roots had the edge in overall possession going into the half despite both teams having five shots on goal.
With the heat being such a factor, the second half started with more of the same until Johnny Rodriguez netted his first USL Championship goal in the 63rd minute. From there the game was a different story. Roots continued to dominate possession and found themselves in the attacking third more regularly. Head Coach Jordan Ferrell made four substitutions in the last 15 minutes to keep the squad fresh on the field, with Tarn Weir making his way back onto the field since suffering an ankle injury in early August. Even in the four minutes of stoppage time, Roots found themselves looking for a second goal rather than playing to maintain the lead. With the win, Roots have gone undefeated in Las Vegas and remain in contention for a spot in the playoffs.
The team returns home this Saturday (9/11) to Laney College for Pride Night against San Diego Loyal.
