Rockford IceHogs honored as UHL Member Club of the Year

May 9, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO--- The United Hockey League (UHL) announced Tuesday that the Rockford IceHogs have been named the 2005-06 UHL Member Club of the Year as selected by the league's Board of Governors.

The team experienced a record-setting season on the ice. They finished the regular season with a 48-19-9 record, a Western Division Title, and their second straight Colonial Cup Playoff appearance. It was the most wins and the fewest losses since the team has been in Rockford. The 105 points in the standings were also the most in team history. There were seven different skaters who scored 20 or more goals during the regular season and 15 players who registered a plus-10 or better rating. This was all accomplished with a very young team that included eleven rookies on the season's final roster.

Additionally, the IceHogs set new team marks in the following categories during the 2005-06 regular season: Longest win streak (11), longest home win streak (7), goals scored (292), most penalty minutes (2,592), and highest penalty kill (87.0%).

The Rockford IceHogs established formal affiliation agreements with the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL) and Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League (NHL). A total of 14 different players from the IceHogs earned call-ups to the AHL during the 2005-06 season.

Off the ice, the club continued to make significant contributions to their community, most notably through the efforts of the IceHogs Charitable Foundation which was established in March 2006. Their 7th Annual Jersey Auction raised $56,825 with all proceeds benefiting local non-profit organizations. Other events of the IceHogs Charitable Foundation included a "Tip-A-Hog", which included all players as guest waiters and bartenders. All tips from the event where distributed to charity by the Foundation. A "Bowl-A-Thon" was also conducted by the team at a Rockford area bowling alley which resulted in over $2,000 raised for a local scholarship fund.

In conjunction with the local FOX television station, the club developed a monthly magazine-style show named "Bacon Bits", which featured various highlights, interviews, and profiles of the team. For home radio broadcasts, the team introduced rinkside reporting this season and continued to feature a fan interactive post game call-in show.

The IceHogs also broke their attendance record from a season ago as a total of 150,548 fans visited the Rockford MetroCentre during the regular season for an average of 3,961 per contest.

The UHL Member Club of the Year is determined by the team's overall success both on and off the ice. The award was first presented following the 1996-97 season. It is the second consecutive season that the Rockford IceHogs have earned UHL Member Club of Year honors.
