Rivs Get Back on Track in Win Over Whale
February 19, 2018 - Premier Hockey Federation (PHF)
Metropolitan Riveters News Release
Coming off their only loss of the season the Metropolitan Riveters found their mojo again and grinded out a 4-2 win over the Connecticut Whale, and moved closer to locking up home-ice advantage throughout the upcoming Isobel Cup Playoffs. The next two weeks the Rivs will host the Buffalo Beauts to determine playoff positioning.
The Riveters were shorthanded without both Miye D'Oench and Erika Lawler, but they still had a balanced attack led by Courtney Burke, Rebecca Russo, and Alexa Gruschow, who each had a goal and an assist in the game for the league's top team.
Burke started the scoring in the opening period with a blue line blast on the power play but Connecticut was able to find an equalizer on their own power play when Amanda Boulier cashed in and slipped a puck past Katie Fitzgerald. In the second period, it was Bray Ketchum giving the Rivs another one-goal lead when she snapped a shot past Sydney Rossman that rang off the post and found the back of the net.
Entering the third trailing by a goal it only took Rivs-killer Kelly Babstock 49 seconds to even the game and silence the home crowd momentarily. Less than three minutes later Russo deflected a point shot past Rossman to give the Riveters a 3-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
Connecticut had their chances to even things up and even outshot their opponents for in the game, but in the end, the Rivs were just too much and Gruschow added a goal with less than two minutes left in regulation - and before the Whale could pull Rossman for an extra skater.
Game Notes: Rossman finished with 19 saves and Fitzgerald had 23. Boulier led all skaters with eight shots on goal and Babstock had seven for the Whale, and three Riveters had a team-high four shots apiece (Burke, Russo, Madison Packer).
