Greensboro, NC - The Charleston RiverDogs slugged seven homers, including a season-high four in the second game, as they swept a doubleheader from the Greensboro Bats by scores of 7-5 and 6-3 at War Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.
The sweep leaves Charleston (28-18) no worse than tied for first place in the South Atlantic League's Southern Division while Greensboro (11-36) has lost its last 10 games.
In the first game, which began Wednesday night and was suspended by rain in the fifth inning, Tommy Nichols connected for a three-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the ninth. Jason Pridie also homered for Charleston in the opener. Greensboro fought back from a 4-1 deficit with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. In the eighth, Delmon Young's run-scoring single and Wes Bankston's RBI-groundout put the RiverDogs back on top at 6-5. Nichols provided an insurance run with his second homer of the game.
Reliever Tony Perez (2-0) pitched one inning for the win, and Scott Vandermeer finished with two scoreless innings to record his eighth save. Paul Mildren (2-3) took the loss for Greensboro.
The seven-inning second contest saw Wes Bankston hit two homers in a game for the second time in four days. His three-run blast in the first inning and a solo job in the fifth helped Charleston build a 5-2 lead. Nichols hit his third long ball in two games, and Elliot Johnson connected in the seventh inning for the RiverDogs' fourth homer of the game.
Charleston has cracked 10 homers in the first four games of the current road trip, including four by Bankston, three by Nichols and one each by Delmon Young, Jason Pridie and Elliot Johnson.
Riverdogs starter Brian Bulger (6-0) got the win, tying him for most victories in the league. It was also Bulger's 17th career win as a RiverDog, matching Omar Olivares' all-time Charleston record set in 1987-88.
Bob Cramer relieved Bulger with two men on base and the tying run at bat in the seventh. The lefthander earned his fourth save as he struck out Joe Mazzuca to complete the sweep.
The third game of the series is Friday at 7:05pm. Lefthander Jino Gonzalez (3-3, 6.82 ERA) gets the start for Charleston against Greensboro righthander Mauro Zarate (1-3, 7.34).
The RiverDogs' next home game is Thursday, June 3 against the Rome Braves. Tickets for all RiverDogs home games and the 45th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, June 29 at Riley Park, are available in person at the Riley Park Box Office, by phone at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) and online at etix.com and riverdogs.com .
