Philadelphia Force News Release
Allentown PA - A three-run fourth inning was too much for the Philadelphia Force as the New England Riptide rallied to a 5-1 win in front of a small crowd at ECTB Stadium. The loss was the first for the Force in the 2008 season. The Force (4-1) jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Clare Burnum hit a one-out single to right center and Trena Peel moved her to second base when she was hit by a pitch. Jenna Hall then hit a single in the left-center gap, scoring Burnum to make the score 1-0. The Riptide were quick to respond in the top of the second. Carmen Paez was the first Riptide batter to reach base in the inning when she walked. Jocelyn Forest, who came in to pinch run for Paez, stole second base and then advanced to third on a passed ball. Lisa Iancin singled to right field to drive in Forest.
The Riptide continued to rally in the top of the fourth with one out. Lyndsey Angus began the threat when she was hit by a pitch. Jessica Merchant then reached base on a fielder's choice before Iancin singled up the middle. Iancin and Merchant then advanced on a passed ball. Margo Pruis came in for Amy Harre (2-1), but the Riptide continued their hot hitting. Lisa Modglin jumped on Pruis right away when she doubled to right field, knocking in two runs. KJ Kelley singled to left field, driving in Modglin to make the score 4-1. However, Pruis was able to retire the next two Riptide batters to end the inning. The Force made a threat in the bottom of the sixth when Hall blasted a single off the center field fence. Meghan Wolfer came in to pinch run for Hall before rookie, Savannah Long moved her to second on her first professional hit. However, the Riptide (2-3) defense was able to contain the Force when Long was called out at second on a fielder's choice. Ashley Smith and Rocky Spencer both struck out to end the inning. The Riptide scored one more run in the top of the seventh when Carrie Embree walked, and later, stole second. Angus then singled up the middle, scoring Embree, making the final score 5-1.
For the Force, Burnum and Hall each had two hits in the game. For New England, Iancin and Modglin also had two hits and Modglin added 2 RBIs. Forest (1-1) went the distance for the Riptide. She struck out eight and walked none.
The Force look to rebound when they take on the Riptide for the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. The game will be played at ECTB Stadium.
