Frisco RoughRiders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Missouri - The Frisco RoughRiders outslugged the Springfield Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, winning 14-12 from Hammons Field. Justin Foscue paced the offense for the Riders, crushing his second grand slam of the season in a five-RBI day.
For the fourth game in a row, RoughRiders (15-12, 51-45) found the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Dustin Harris began the scoring with an RBI double, plating Aaron Zavala and giving the Riders a 1-0 lead.
In the second, the Cardinals (15-12, 46-50) struck back with a Justin Toerner two-run home run and they grabbed a 2-1 advantage.
Frisco volleyed back in the third when Zavala doubled in Jonathan Ornelas, his first career Double-A hit, and Foscue then followed with an RBI single to nab a 3-2 lead for the Riders. Zavala finished his second-career game in Double-A 2-for-3 with three walks, four runs scored, two RBIs and two doubles.
After Springfield tied the game in the third with an RBI double from Chase Pinder, the Riders came back with four runs in the fourth. Josh Stowers plated a run on an RBI double, Ornelas knocked in Sandro Fabian on an RBI single and Dustin Harris drove in a pair with his second double of the game to make it 7-3.
In the fifth, Jordan Walker mashed a solo home run and another run came in on an error to cut the Springfield deficit to 7-5, but Foscue immediately answered in the top of the sixth with a grand slam to blow the game open at 11-5.
Zavala then added his second RBI double in the top of the seventh to balloon the lead to 12-5.
The Cardinals attempted to come back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three times to make it 12-8, but once again, the Riders answered with a two-run double from Fabian to increase the lead back to six runs.
Walker hit his second home run of the game and his fourth of the series, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the eighth and Chandler Redman added a two-run homer of his own to cut it to 14-12. That was as close as it was when Fer Ozuna entered and recorded the six-out save, his eighth of the year.
Avery Weems (2-5) took home the win for the Riders, allowing three runs, one earned, over his three innings while striking out two and walking one. Michael McGreevy (5-3) was saddled with the loss for Springfield.
Frisco returns home next to begin the month of August with a six-game series against the Amarillo Sod Poodles, beginning on August 2nd at 7:05 p.m. For tickets and more information about the Frisco RoughRiders, visit RidersBaseball.com or call 972.731.9200.
