RHP Martinez Earns Relief Honors in North American League
October 24, 2011 - North American League (NAmL) News Release
(San Ramon, CA. October 24th, 2011) The North American League announced today that Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings right handed pitcher Edgar Martinez has been named Fireman of the Year, recognizing him as the league's most effective relief pitcher. Martinez, who turned 30 yesterday, dominated hitters all season long with his mid-90's fastball and above average command. The 6'1, 215 pound righty led the NAL with 20 saves and finished 2011 with a 2.48 ERA. He recorded an impressive 60 strikeouts through 32.2 innings pitched, walking just 6 batters.
Martinez, a native of Venezuela, was signed as an international free agent by the Boston Red Sox in 1998 and made his professional debut as a catcher in 1999. In 2004, Martinez converted to pitching and found immediate success, posting a 0.90 ERA in limited action that season and a 2.10 ERA in his first full season on the mound in 2005. Martinez spent all of 2007 and 2008 in AAA with the Pawtucket PawSox. Martinez was undoubtedly the most valuable arm in the WhiteWings' bullpen in 2011 and contributed tremendously to the team's 51-37 regular season record.
