Cleveland City Stars Reserve Team Kicks Off Season With New Format And 9-0 Victory:
The new 2008 CCS Reserve team opened its season this past weekend with a 9-0 defeat of the Serbian Club team. It was a good start for the program that has re-launched under the guidance of James Jaggard, Marcelo Galvao and Jason Hotchkin.
This season's format includes top young players from US colleges as well as up and coming players from the UK. The roster features 22 players and the club has joined the competitive Lake Erie Soccer League for the 2008 season and will also play weekly friendly's against PDL and possibly MLS Reserve team competition.
The purpose of this year's program is to give young college aged players an opportunity to lead a professional life style, both on the field with training and throughout the week with off the field responsibilities.
Danny Thompson, an 18 year old Forward from local Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, is one of the players that is looking to use the CCSR as a springboard into his college career, as he will attend Messiah College in the fall. Thompson is coming off a strong stint with a local U-18 youth team, where he helped them to capture the indoor national championship.
Another player that that looks to capitalize on the opportunity to play for the CCSR team is Chris Burke from Manchester, England. Burke, a 23 year old Midfielder, was spotted by Jaggard during a recruiting trip over seas and was persuaded to join the program. Burke has played semi-professionally in England and has decided to take the next step in his career.
"We're excited about the new format for the Reserve Team. We feel like this is a great way to help these guys progress towards their goals, whether its to play in college or to better themselves at the college level and move on professionally," said CCS Executive Director, Aaron Tredway. "We have watched Danny for quite some time. He was impressive and we wanted him to be a part of the program. Chris is a good story because he wants to help others progress in their careers as well as progressing in his own. We feel like he's a perfect fit with us because of his passion to help others."
The 22 man roster is being supported by local host families. With the increased roster size for the 2008 season there is still a need for host families.
Becoming a host is a great way to assist in the development of these young players as they look to build their careers. Host family commitments generally run through July 25th.
