Reinebold leaves Amsterdam
Published on March 2, 2003 under National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release
JEFF REINEBOLD, a former World Bowl-winning assistant coach and stalwart of the NFL Europe League's national player development programme, is leaving the organisation to take a coaching position at Louisiana Tech.
Reinebold was preparing for his third season as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach of the Amsterdam Admirals, having spent the previous two seasons in the same role at the Rhein Fire, where he was a member of the coaching staff that won World Bowl 2000. He also coached for the Fire in 1995 before spending two years as general manager and head coach of the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
For the past two years, Reinebold has spent most of the NFLEL offseason in Europe helping to develop the game locally. He has been involved in evaluation and coaching of the NFLEL's national players and constructed programmes for the development of European coaches. He has also been active in youth football, including serving as offensive coordinator for Team Europe in the Global Junior Championships at the last two Super Bowls.
Reinebold will be taking the position of special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Louisiana Tech, who posted a 4-8 record in 2002 after winning the Western Athletic Conference the previous year, their first season in the conference. The team's head coach is Jack Bicknell Junior, son of F.C. Barcelona Dragons head coach Jack Bicknell.
Reinebold, a former wide receiver at the University of Maine and veteran of several college coaching positions, said: "It has been an honour to be involved with the NFL Europe League. The emotional decision would have been to remain with the league because it means so much to me, but this is a great opportunity."
After spending a total of five seasons in the NFLEL, Reinebold's outstanding memories of the league will be of the people he has worked with. "Three of them in particular," he said. "(NFL Vice-President of Football Operations) JOHN BEAKE, who gave me the opportunity here and who has done so much to upgrade the league; (Player Personnel Consultant) RAY WILLSEY, who has been a mentor to me; and (NFL Europe Director of Game Development) TONY ALLEN, who gave the me the opportunity to become involved in the national player programme.
"I will really miss working with the national players. I have seen the kind of obstacles they have had to overcome to develop as players and the kind of commitment they have shown - from buying their own equipment to practising on unmarked fields. To see guys like Scott Couper and Daniel Benetka achieve what they have is fantastic and I am very excited about seeing the progress of the young group of players we have coming through. I will continue to watch and take pride in their progress."
Allen commented, "We are very sorry to see Jeff leave. He has been an invaluable addition to the national development programme for the past two years and the progress of some of the younger European players is a testament to the fine work he has done. The contribution we expect many of those players to make during the upcoming NFLEL season will be a tribute to Jeff's dedication to our programme."
