Red Sox shock Baycats in walk-off

Published on July 3, 2014 under International Basketball League (IBL) News Release

The Brantford Red Sox rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the ninth, shocking the first place Barrie Baycats 6-5 in a walk off win. Nic Burdett hit a Josh Soffer offering to drive in Lee Delfino and send the Brantford crowd home happy. Soffer had been brought in with one out in the ninth and recorded only a single out while giving up three hits including the game winner to Burdett. The loss is only Barrie's fourth on the year and they stand at 18-4 on the season.

Barrie's Nick Fogarty was removed in place of Soffer after Brandon Daily and Ben Bostick both reached base with one out in the ninth. Delfino was the first hitter to face Soffer and he singled to drive in Daily. Designated hitter Nick Weglarz than drove in Bostick to tie the game. Burdett was up next and his game-winning hit snapped the Baycats win streak at five.

Christian Garcia, who has previously pitched in the Houston Astros minor league system, took the win going three innings and striking out three. Weglarz had three hits on the night and Delfino, who scored the deciding run, had a hit and two RBI. Dailey, hitting in the leadoff spot, hit his first home run of the season. Burdett finished with two hits in his two plate appearances.

Barrie's Brodie Harkness had done enough to put the Baycats in position for the win before the late collapse after going seven innings and allowing three runs while striking out two. Brantford's Nathan Forer also put in a strong start with four strikeouts, no walks and three runs allowed over six innings.

Brantford, improving to 8-14, next plays Friday night when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Barrie next sees action on Saturday when they travel to London for a doubleheader against the Majors.
