Red-Hot Minnesota United FC Tops #Fight4Fall Table After Exciting

August 16, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL) News Release

NEW YORK - North American Soccer League Spring Season Champion Minnesota United FC stayed red hot on Saturday, highlighting a full night of league action with a 5-1 win over Indy Eleven. United extended its unbeaten streak to ten games and leapfrogged the San Antonio Scorpions to earn the top spot in the NASL Fall Season Table going into Sunday.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies climbed into the fourth and final position in The Championship, topping the New York Cosmos at Al Lang Stadium. The 3-1 win also solidified the Rowdies' third-place position in the NASL Fall Season Table, keeping them right on the heels of Minnesota and San Antonio. FC Edmonton earned a dramatic road win in Carolina, putting them even in the Fall Table with the Cosmos and the Atlanta Silverbacks, who grinded out a 1-1 draw against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Lockhart Stadium.

MNU vs. IND

United forward Christian Ramirez not only increased his lead in the NASL Golden Boot Race, but he did it in spectacular fashion, putting away a bicycle kick and adding a crafty chip to pace the NASL Spring Season Champions to a 5-1 win over Indy Eleven. Daniel Mendes, Aaron Pitchkolan, and Jamie Watson were also on target for the Loons, who capped off a three-game homestand in style. Indy's Klberson continued his fine Fall Season scoring form, adding a late consolation goal for the visitors.

"It was a great night for the club," said United Head Coach Manny Lagos. "There is a lot to talk about, but the result was that we won three big games during our homestand. To finish the homestand with nine points was great."

TBR vs. NYC

In a classic NASL rivalry matchup, the Tampa Bay Rowdies earned their first win over the New York Cosmos since May 26, 1984. Goals from midfielders Keith Savage and Blake Wagner and defender Tamika Mkandawire earned the Rowdies a convincing 3-1 win over the Cosmos, who missed their opportunity to keep pace with the likes of Minnesota and San Antonio in the Race To The Championship.

"I think we were disciplined for the most part, and that's how we have been working and practicing. Everyone played their roles well tonight, and they were rewarded for their efforts, so I'm delighted," said Rowdies Head Coach Ricky Hill. "We wish we had more nights like this at Al Lang Stadium because we really want to make this place our fortress."

CAR vs. FCE

A penalty kick from midfielder Neil Hlavaty deep into second-half stoppage time gave FC Edmonton a massive 3-2 road win over the Carolina RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. RailHawks forward Zack Schilawski continued his impressive scoring run, adding a pair of goals, but it wasn't enough to get past a tough Edmonton side that has picked up seven points in its last four games.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get three points tonight. I give so much credit to our players tonight because they were absolutely magnificent," said FC Edmonton Head Coach Colin Miller. "I don't want to take anything away from Carolina - this is a tough place to play. We put so much into it tonight that it would have been a crime to drop two points here."

FTL vs. ATL

Tied for second in the league in goals scored, Silverbacks forward Jaime Chavez got his team off to a dream start in Fort Lauderdale, scoring in the 7 th minute at Lockhart Stadium. The lead wouldn't last, though, as midfielder Fafa Picault equalized for the Strikers midway through the second half to earn a share of the spoils. With the Rowdies' victory, the Strikers are now even on points with their Florida rivals in the NASL Combined Table with 22 points.
