Rebels Tie Season High Point Streak at 7

The Rebels visited the Johnstown Tomahawks this past weekend for only the second time this season. The Rebels went into the weekend riding a six-game point streak, just one shy of tying their season high. The Tomahawks had just gotten swept for the first time this season and were looking to turn things around against the second-best team in the East. The Rebels trailed in the season series 3-2 and were looking to be ahead after the conclusion of game two.
The first game of the weekend the Rebels got on the board first, thanks to a power-play goal by Antonio Venuto (11). The score would remain 1-0 Rebels after the first period. In the second period both Ryan Keane and Carter McPhail made some remarkable saves to result in a scoreless middle frame. The Rebels were just 20 minutes away from their third win against Johnstown and a chance to even the series. Unfortunately, Cameron Hebert was able to beat Keane for his 19th goal of the season. The score would remain 1-1 after 60 minutes of play so both sides got ready for 3-on-3 overtime. The Tomahawks are the second-best team in the league in extra hockey and have not lost when a game has been decided by overtime (4-0). Jamestown on the other hand is 0-for-3 when it comes to 3-on-3 hockey. With a lot of open ice for five minutes both teams had many scoring chances but were unable to beat the goalies, sending the game into a shootout. The Tomahawks were 2-1 in sudden death hockey this season and the Rebels were 2-2. In the first round both shooters were unsuccessful. To start the second round, it was Jim Glynn for the Rebels, he has not missed in a shootout attempt this season (2-2). He started out slow then tried to cut right in, but McPhail was able to stay with him the whole time. Next up for the Tomahawks it was Joe Kile, he has never been selected for a shootout once this season. He went down and was able to get Keane moving then put it up high. It was all up to the leading scorer Alex Frye to keep his team in contention for the win. He also started off slow then picked up his pace and he progressed down the ice. He tried to fake out McPhail, but it was to no avail. Johnstown skated away with the two points and now led the season series 4-2. With the game going into extra hockey the Rebels were able to get a point out of it, tying their season high point streak at seven. With the performance Keane put on during the game he was able to capture the number one spot for goalies overall in the league, posting a 1.79 goals-against-average and a save percentage of .928%.
Less than 24 hours later these cross-state rivals were back on the ice for game two of the weekend. In game two we saw the same netminders as the night before. The scoring did not start off the same though as it was Carson Briere finding the back of the net on the power play, giving him a league high in power-play goals at 20. Two minutes later though, it was Antonio Venuto that tied the game up after his team won the offensive zone draw and he was able to snap one right past McPhail. It would remain 1-1 until there was 10:12 left in the middle period when Roman Kramer was able to find the back of the net, giving his team the lead once more. The Tomahawks added one more to their total early in the third, putting them now up by a pair. Head Coach Joe Coombs pulled Keane in the late stages of regulation in hopes that the 6-on-5 advantage would pay off for his team. Sadly, it would not as the horn sounded giving the Rebels a 3-1 loss. It was only their second regulation loss in 14 games.
With their win, Johnstown became the first team to clinch a playoff spot with an overall record of 35-6-1 (71pts). The Rebels were swept for the first time since their home opening weekend. They have an overall record of 24-11-3-3 (54pts). Keane still sits atop the league for goalies overall and his looking to remain there after this weekend when the Rebels host New Jersey. The Rebels are only ten points ahead of the third place Titans so this weekend will be huge for Jamestown so they can keep their hopes alive of having home ice advantage when the playoffs commence.
