Vancouver Ravens News Release
VANCOUVER (Monday, November 3rd) - The Vancouver Ravens Lacrosse Club, one of 10 teams preparing for the 2003-2004 National Lacrosse League campaign, will officially open their pre-season Training Camp this weekend, Saturday, November 8th, and Sunday, November 9th, at Sportstown BC in Richmond, BC.
The weekend workouts will officially begin a 10-week countdown to the Ravens' 2003-2004 home opener at General Motors Place, a Friday, January 9th, showdown against the visiting Calgary Roughnecks. The franchise opens its NLL regular season schedule on the road, playing Friday, Dec. 26th, in Arizona.
The Ravens will go with two practices Saturday, Nov. 8th (1-3 p.m. and 6-8p.m.) and one on Sunday, Nov. 9th (1-3 p.m.). It is expected that Director of Lacrosse Operations & Head Coach Paul Dal Monte and General Manager Dave Evans will have more than 30 players report to training camp. The players are vying for berths on what is expected to be a final roster of 23 players.
"With the addition of Mark Miyashita, Craig Conn and Kevin Olson as first round draft picks, we expect the competition for final roster positions to be the strongest in our young franchise's history," said Evans. "We also expect to have some quality free agents in the mix, so we're counting on having to make some very difficult decisions in December."
Miyashita, a product of Richmond, BC and the Burnaby Junior Lakers Minto Cup champion program under Dal Monte and Dr. Dave Lough (also Assistant General Manager of the Ravens) was drafted No. 1 overall in the NLL Entry Draft Saturday, Oct. 26th, in Toronto. Miyashita, 21, was the No. 1 overall draft pick in the Western Lacrosse Association's own entry draft in 2002, playing with the Maple Ridge Burrards.
Conn, also 21, hails from the St. Catharines Athletics powerhouse. He led the Athletics to three consecutive Minto Cup appearances and led the scoring in all three, including their win earlier this year over the Junior Lakers. The Ravens also drafted Olson of Burnaby and Devan Wray of Edmonton, Alta. All Ravens practices at Sportstown BC are open to fans.
