Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Gary Southshore Railcats (25-27) scored five runs in the top of the first inning and that proved to be enough to defeat the Flyers (20-33) 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Alexian Field.

The RailCats jumped on the Flyers and ace Dustin Glant early and often in the top of the first. The inning was led off by an Adam Klein triple for the second night in a row. Jay Pecci brought him home on a sacrifice fly to deep center, which made the score 1-0. Mike Massaro came up next and singled and was brought in by the next hitter, Cristian Guerrero, who hit his ninth home run of the season deep over the center field wall. Tanner Townsend then doubled and was plated by Mike Rohde's base hit. The first baseman was driven in on a Mike Valadez double, bringing the Railcats lead to five.

The Flyers answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, as leadoff man Brandon Newton smacked a single to center and was brought in on a two out hit up the middle by Joey Gomes, making the score 5-1 RailCats.

Schaumburg would pick up another run in the fourth. Josh Burrus roped a triple down the right field line and was brought in on a Chris Schultz sacrifice fly to deep center field.

The Flyers would continue to rally in the eighth when Ruddy Yan singled to lead off the frame. After advancing to third on a Tom Fitzgerald ground out to second, Yan scored on a passed ball by Railcats catcher Louis Ott, pulling Schaumburg to within two.

In the bottom of the ninth the Flyers would tack on one more after a leadoff single and a steal by Burrus. The designated hitter was then brought home on a Richard Mercado single to right. Unfortunately, the Flyers could not convert with two men on and two outs, as closer Andy Shipman nailed down his league leading 13th save of the season.

Flyers starter Dustin Glant (4-3) pitched well after his rough first inning. The righty pitched five innings, allowed eight hits, five runs, and struck out one.

Railcats hurler Brad Halsey (3-4) tossed six solid innings, giving up just two runs on five hits. The former major leaguer struck out two, while walking one batter.

The Flyers have an off day tomorrow, then travel to Kansas City for a three game set with the first place T-Bones starting on Tuesday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Join Alex Perlman on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com for all the action as the Flyers take on the T-Bones. The Schaumburg Flyers Pregame Show gets rolling at 6:55 PM with the game to follow.
