Quebec's Pierre, Battle Creek's Johnson Now PBL All-Time Defensive Career Leaders
February 18, 2009 - Premier Basketball League (PBL) News Release
Chicago, IL...With his two blocked shots in Friday night's contest against the Battle Creek Knights, Quebec Kebs center Jonas Pierre became the PBL's career blocked-shots leader. His second block of the night was the 37th of his PBL career, and surpassed the previous PBL blocked shots champion, Reginald George, who blocked 36 shots for the Rockford Fury in the 2007-08 season.
Pierre's feet is more impressive in that it only took the 6'10" center from Lincoln University 10 games to achieve this mark, whereas the previous record-holder needed an entire season to amass 36 blocked shots.
"It is a great accomplishment for me to have become to PBL's all-time leader in blocked shots," said Pierre. "I am grateful for the opportunity that the Quebec Kebs and the PBL have given me and, as a defensive presence, I take a lot of pride in setting that record. Records are meant to be broken, but I am very pleased to be the actual holder of that mark."
Pierre may not hold the record for long, however, as Rochester RazorSharks teammates Ron Rollerson (currently 34 blocks) and Xavier Morton (25 blocks) are also among the PBL's all-time blockers.
Meanwhile, Rashi Johnson of the Battle Creek Knights recently earned his 45th career PBL stolen ball, making Johnson currently the PBL's all-time steals king. Johnson, who played last season for the Rockford Fury, surpassed Anthony Lumpkin of Jacksonville, who previously held the steals title with 40 thefts. Prior to his PBL career, the 6'2" 190-pound shooting guard played his collegiate basketball at Michigan State.
"Anticipation can be good," said Johnson. "If you use it in the right way, you can benefit from it."
"Rashi takes great pride in his defense, and his ability to anticipate," said Knight Head Coach Terry Sare. "Playing his college basketball at Michigan State, defense is expected. He is one of those players that is not exceptionally fast, but is very quick. He has "it" when it comes to having a nose for the ball."
Also matching the 40-steal mark this weekend was the Rochester RazorSharks' Jerice Crouch, who added to last year's 30-steal season with another ten robberies in 2009.
Now competing in its second season, the thirteen-team Premier Basketball League is one of the top minor league basketball circuits, with successful franchises throughout the United States and Canada. For more information on the Premier Basketball League, please visit http://www.pblproball.com.
