Puerto Rico and Vancouver Both Earn First Leg Wins in USSF D-2 Pro League Postseason

CHICAGO (Oct. 7, 2010) - The USSF D-2 Pro League Playoffs continued earlier this evening in Bayamon, Puerto Rico as the Puerto Rico Islanders defeated the Rochester Rhinos 2-0 in the first leg of their first round matchup. Later in the night, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC used two early goals to defeat the Portland Timbers at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The No. 8 seed Islanders will go into their second leg matchup in Rochester with a two-goal advantage over the No. 1 Rhinos, and No. 5 Vancouver will carry the same advantage to No. 4 Portland. Rochester will be looking towards their June 26 match against Puerto Rico for inspiration as they won 3-0 at Marina Auto Stadium. Portland will need a stronger performance at home against Vancouver if they are to turn around the series as they recorded a 2-1 win on April 29 and a 0-0 draw on July 3 at PGE Park earlier in the year.

The USSF D-2 Pro League playoffs will continue with the second leg of the First Round on Saturday, Oct. 9, as Rochester takes on Puerto Rico at 7 p.m. ET at Marina Auto Stadium, and Carolina plays host to Minnesota at 7 p.m. ET at WakeMed Soccer Park. Later in the evening, Austin and Montreal square off at 8:30 p.m. ET at House Park in Austin, Texas.

The playoffs consist of a two-leg, aggregate goals series in the first round, semifinals and finals. Away goals will not be considered a tie-breaker in the aggregate goal series. If teams are tied on aggregate goals after the conclusion of the second leg, they will play two 15 minute overtime periods. Penalty kicks will follow overtime if the teams have not broken the deadlock.
