Professional Arena Soccer League Update

December 11, 2012 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

I-90 Rivalry Heats Up

12/11/12 - It didn't take long for the Chicago Mustangs and Rockford Rampage to warm up to each other. The first year PASL teams have played twice and both games could be filed under: classic.

On November 24 the Rampage rallied and won the game on a shorthanded goal with nine seconds left in regulation. Saturday's rematch in Chicago was even more dramatic.

Rockford held a 6-5 lead with one minute to go, but Omar Tapia tied the score with 54 seconds remaining. Bojan Jovicic seemingly won the game for Rockford when he scored with 45 seconds left, but Brian Velazquez struck with 18 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In the OT Nestor Hernandez fired wide and collected his own rebound and blasted it past stunned goalkeeper Igor Dimov, who was making his season debut.

Player of the Week

Alan Hagerty, Illinois Piasa

The rookie goalkeeper, who came up in the Cincinnati Kings system, was tasked with facing the 4-1 Rockford Rampage while backing up the 0-5 Illinois Piasa. The Piasa had been averaging over 11 goals against per game in their five losses, but Hagerty stepped up to give Illinois a 5-2 win. Hagerty was credited with 32 saves and did not allow a second half goal.

Sockers Streaks at 30, 43

San Diego's regular season winning streak stands at 30. San Diego is also an all-time 27-0 at home during the regular season. Including playoffs, US Open games, and the FIFRA Club Championships, the Sockers have won 43 in a row, surpassing the US Pro Team Sports record of 40 set by the indoor football Sioux Falls Storm in 2008.

Defense Not Included

The Anaheim Bolts amazing two seasons continued. The Bolts, arguably the most interesting team in the league for statistical phenomena, lost 17-12 to the Turlock Express Sunday. Anaheim fell to 3-3 despite the fact that they have scored at least 10 goals in each game. The three highest scoring games in the league this year have involved the Bolts. The average Bolts game this season has seen 21.7 goals per game.

Hail Cesar!

Cesar Romero has rejoined the struggling Mexico Toros to try to bolster a run for the playoffs in the relatively week Southwestern Division. The Las Vegas Legends have a 2 1/2 game lead in the division and the remaining three teams, including Mexico, have losing records. Romero made a name for himself last year by scoring nine goals in a game, not once, but twice. He then signed with Chivas USA of MLS. In his season debut with the Toros, Romero was good for two goals and an assist, but Mexico suffered a 16-9 loss at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Crazy Eight

For the first time in league history, eight games will be played on the same night this Saturday.
