Philadelphia Union II News Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After capping off its second-straight unbeaten June, Bethlehem Steel FC looks to extend its unbeaten ways when it travels to rival Penn FC on Friday, July 6. Kick off from FNB Field in Harrisburg is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast locally on Service Electric and on ESPN+.
Steel FC continued its season-long unbeaten streak last weekend against the Charlotte Independence, with a resounding 4-1 victory. Rookie midfielder Drew Skundrich picked up USL Team of the Week honors for his performance in the match, scoring his first professional goal and assist. Philadelphia Union forward Fabian Herbers tallied his third goal with Steel FC and added two assists while Santi Moar struck for a goal and assist as well.
"We're just taking it game by game," Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke said. "I think the ability to focus on each opponent and areas where we might be able to get an advantage is where we've been good and concentrating on it. That's given us the ability to stay in games or get on top of games over the last couple weeks."
While Friday's match will be the first Steel FC at Penn FC matchup, the two sides have met six previous times when the franchise was Harrisburg City Islanders. Steel FC is 2-3-1 all-time against its Keystone State rival and won the last two matches in the series with 3-1 and 1-0 victories.
Much like Steel FC, Penn FC enters July on its own five-match unbeaten streak. Coach Raoul Voss's side enters the contest after a 1-1 draw at Indy Eleven in which leading scorer Lucky Kkosana scored his fifth goal in three matches. Friday's match could feel like a potential playoff match with the two squads separated by one point in a crowded Eastern Conference field.
"They are defensively sound, they've had a little bit of luck on the road the last couple weeks with a couple red cards," Burke said on the upcoming match. "We know they will be good at home, it's a difficult environment to play there. The surface creates a little bit of an issue for us to play exactly the way we want to play but I think if our mentality and pressing are good then we have a chance anywhere we go."
