Premier Basketball League Releases 2010-2011 Schedule
Published on October 1, 2010 under Premier Basketball League (PBL) News Release
(CHICAGO) - With eight highly competitive teams in two divisions, the Premier Basketball League is pleased to announce the upcoming schedule for the 2010-2011 regular season. The League enters its fourth season of operations as one of only two professional basketball leagues in the USA, along with the D - League, and features not only the return of the League's most popular and well-supported Clubs; it also welcomes the arrival of two new teams to the PBL lineup.
One of the newest arrivals, the Dayton (Ohio) Air Strikers, will appear in the League's first game of the regular season, as they visit Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY, to face the Rochester RazorSharks. The RazorSharks, who won the PBL's first two championships (2008 and 2009), are once again coached by Rod Baker, the League's leader in coaching wins (51-9 in the regular season). Dayton's home opener will take place Tuesday, January 11, 2011, as the Air Strikers host the RazorSharks in the Aviation City.
The other new team joining the PBL is the Kentucky Bluegrass Stallions. The Stallions, based in Georgetown, KY, open their season on the road on Sunday, January 2, 2011, when they travel to Lawton-Fort Sill (Oklahoma) to take on the Cavalry. The Cavs' home opener will be Lawton's first league contest since their Championship run during the 2009-10 season. Cavs head coach, Micheal Ray Richardson, hopes to become the first minor league basketball coach in nearly three decades to win four consecutive minor league hoop titles.
The Dayton Air Strikers, Kentucky Bluegrass Stallions, Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry, and the Rochester RazorSharks will comprise the PBL's four-team "Western" Division, while the "Eastern" Division will encompass the Saint John Mill Rats, Quebec Kebs, Vermont Frost Heaves, and the Halifax Rainmen.
During the 2009-10 season, the Rainmen became the first professional basketball team from Halifax to reach a playoff round. Rainmen head coach, Les Berry, hopes to lead the Rainmen into the playoffs once again. The Rainmen will start their campaign by hosting the Vermont Frost Heaves on January 2, 2011, at the Halifax Metro Centre in Nova Scotia.
In the final months of last year's season, the Frost Heaves and the Rainmen battled for the last available playoff spot. Frost Heaves head coach, Joseph Salerno, took over the squad mid-season and turned the Green Mountain hoopsters into a great team with a strong end-of-season run. The Frost Heaves will host the Cavalry on Friday, January 7, 2011, at the Barre Municipal Auditorium, the site for all ten of Vermont's home games this season.
The Quebec Kebs, having one of the most vocal and loyal fanbases in the PBL, have hired veteran head coach Rob Spon to guide their team. Spon, who led the Manchester Millrats to the playoffs in the 2008-09 season, will take the Kebs to Saint John to face the Mill Rats on January 2, 2011. They will then host the Halifax Rainmen on Thursday, January 6 at Laval University's PEPS athletic facility.
In addition to the Quebec Kebs and Halifax Rainmen, the PBL will have a third Canadian team in the League, as the recently-relocated Saint John (New Brunswick) Mill Rats take to the court at Harbour Station. The Mill Rats played for two years in Manchester, NH, and have already received a tremendous amount of support from fans in New Brunswick's largest port city. The Mill Rats' home opener is scheduled for Sunday, January 2, 2011, when they host the Quebec Kebs.
A repeat of last year's exciting PBL finals between the Rochester RazorSharks and the Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry will take place on February 5, when the Cavalry and RazorSharks battle it out at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. It will be the first of four contests this season between the only two teams to ever win PBL championships.
"I'd like to see a Championship game between the only two truly professional basketball leagues," states acting CEO Carrie Ann May, "the PBL and the D-League"
The League's schedule entails that each team will face its divisional opponents four times during the regular season (two home and two away), and will play teams outside its division twice (one home and one away). The League will release the playoff format prior to the start of the season.
"Every game is important when it's such a short season," said Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry head coach Micheal Ray Richardson. "You've got to be ready from day one. And I will be ready. As a coach, you would like to win every game. It doesn't matter if it's Rochester or Quebec or Vermont, you always want to try to get that first win, especially when it's at home."
