Pittsburgh Power News Release
SPOKANE, WA (July 26, 2013) - The Pittsburgh Power ended their 2013 Arena Football League season tonight at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in front of a crowd of 9,341. Despite registering their highest point total in a half (36) and their largest halftime lead (9 points) of the year, the Power (4-14) fell to the Shock (14-4), 61-43. The Shock will go onto the AFL Playoffs this Thursday with their playoff opponent still to be determined.
The Power received opening kickoff, and after converting two fourth downs on their opening drive, quarterback Shane Austin found wide receiver Christian Wise in the back of the end zone for an early 7-0 lead. However, the Shock went on to score three straight touchdowns, including two defensive scores, in an 80-second span, to take a 20-7 advantage. Pittsburgh cut the deficit to 20-14 with a 38-yard touchdown pass by Austin to Wise for the final score of the quarter.
Pittsburgh dominated the 2nd quarter, fueled by an interception by Sergio Gilliam to start a 22-7 Power run. An Austin 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Washington put Pittsburgh back on top, 21-20. On the ensuing Spokane drive, Kirby Griffin sacked Shock quarterback Erik Meyer in the end zone for a safety. On the next Power possession, Austin found Washington again in the end zone for his 100th career receiving touchdown. Spokane scored their only points of the quarter with 46 seconds left as Meyer connected on a 45-yard bomb to receiver Brandon Thompkins. With 21 seconds remaining, the Power scored the final touchdown of the half with an Austin pass to offensive lineman Jason Thomas, putting the Power up, 36-27.
Spokane held Pittsburgh scoreless in the 3rd quarter and outscored the Power 34-7 in the 2nd half. The Power's lone touchdown in the half came late in the 4th quarter on a Julian Talley 9-yard grab from Austin. The game's final score was Spokane receiver Ardron Tennell's fifth touchdown reception of the game.
