Pitchers Dominate, Paints Lose 1-0 in 12 Innings

DANVILLE, Ill. - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, were shutout for the first time this season in a 1-0 loss at Danville in 12 innings Wednesday night.

Prospect League strikeout leader Austin Calopietro made his first start of the season for the Paints (35-19) and dominated. The hard-throwing right-hander thew 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the league's top offense, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out 13.

Tanner Green, the starter for Danville (35-18) did his best to match Calopietro. Green threw five scoreless innings, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out seven.

The theme continued into the late innings as the Paints and Dans went to the bullpen. Chillicothe's Jay Ward made his longest outing of the year. The left-hander threw four shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out four. Danville's Stone Parker threw a pair of scoreless innings, walking two and striking out two.

Danville went to Trevor Thompson (2-0) in the eighth with the game still scoreless. He earned the win for the Dans after five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.

The Paints went to Cal McAninch (2-3) in the 11th inning with no one on and two outs. McAninch struck out his first batter to send the game to the 12th inning scoreless.

After the Paints went down in order in the top of the inning, Danville worked a leadoff walk. A pinch runner stole second and advanced to third as the throw hit the runner and bounced into left-center. It was the first time all game that the Dans had a runner at third. Sam Crail singled to right field, bringing home the game's lone run, the winning run for Danville.

The Paints return home to VA Memorial Stadium Thursday night to play West Virginia at 7:05 p.m. More than 100 prizes will be given away for Fan Appreciation Night and there will be a postgame Fireworks Extravaganza sponsored by Budweiser. It's also Thirsty Thursday, meaning draft beer is just one dollar.
