Pichon Named Player of the Month

July 3, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Wednesday, July 3, 2002) - Philadelphia Charge forward Marinette Pichon has been selected as the WUSA's June Player of the Month by the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.

The 26-year-old Pichon scored six goals in five games as the Charge went 3-0-3 during June. Pichon, who is the captain of France's national team, missed the Charge's June 1 match against San Jose while competing for her country in a World Cup qualifying victory over the Ukraine. She had two multi-goal games during June and scored all but three of the Charge's goals in the month. She now leads the WUSA with nine goals.

"When you play against one forward and it's Pichon, it's like playing against three," Atlanta Head Coach Tom Stone said after the Beat lost 3-1 to the Charge on June 29. "She is very creative and runs off the ball so well."

A look at Marinette Pichon's performances during the month of June follows:

DATE PERFORMANCE
June 1 Did not play in 0-0 draw vs. San Jose at home (with French national team)
June 8 One goal in 1-1 draw vs. Washington at home
June 15 One goal in a 1-0 win over Boston at home
June 19 Two goals in a 3-1 win at Carolina
June 23 Did not score in a 1-1 draw at San Diego June 29 Two goals in 3-1 win over Atlanta at home

Pichon, who captured 20 points in the voting, outdistanced Carolina forward Birgit Prinz (15 pts.), Boston forward Dagny Mellgren (3 pts.), San Jose forward Katia (3 pts.), Washington forward Mia Hamm (3 pts.), New York forward Tiffeny Milbrett (2 pts.) and Philadelphia goalkeeper Melissa Moore (2 pts.). The WUSA's Player of the Month is selected at the end every month throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
