Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons received an Orthodox Christmas present from the Phillies today with the announcement of three more player signings.
Catcher A.J. Hinch and former Red Barons pitchers Brian Powell and Shane Bowers all inked triple-A contracts yesterday.
Hinch, 29, will be entering his 8th professional season since being selected by Oakland in the 3rd round of the 1993 June draft. He has spent all or part of the last six seasons in the big leagues with Oakland, Kansas City and Detroit. In 1997, just his 2nd pro season, he played the entire campaign in Oakland batting .231 with 9 HR and 35 RBI in 120 games. In 346 major league games he has a .220 career average with 32 home runs and 112 RBI. In 358 minor league games he has batted .299 with 46 home runs and 207 RBI.
Last season he split the year between triple-A Toledo and the Detroit Tigers. In 55 games with the Mud Hens he hit .259 with 15 doubles, 4 home ruins and 23 RBI. With Detroit he hit .203 with 3 HR and 11 RBI in just 27 games.
Powell, 30, was acquired July 25 via trade for the Red Barons playoff run from the San Francisco Giants for a player to be named later. With the exception of one start for the Giants, he had spent the entire season at triple-A Fresno where he was primarily a starter going 7-8 with a 4.19 ERA. He made 8 starts for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre going 2-4 with a 4.61 ERA. He ended the season on a strong note tossing a CG 2-hit SHO 8/31 @ Ottawa with one BB and 8 K.
Mr. Powell has spent parts of five seasons in the major leagues with Detroit, Houston and San Francisco compiling a 6-16 mark with a 6.14 ERA. At the minor league level he has had much better success posting a 78-56 record with a 3.82 ERA in 183 games (171 starts).
Bowers, 32, returns to the Phillies' organization and the United States after spending the previous three seasons playing overseas.
Mr. Bowers played the entire 2000 season for the Red Barons appearing in 36 games (17 starts) going 8-7 with a 4.65 ERA and helping the Red Barons to their 2nd consecutive playoff appearance. In the post-season he was 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA.
Following the 2000 season, Mr. Bowers signed with Yokohama Bay Stars in Japan where he played two seasons. Last year he moved to the Korean Baseball Organization pitching for the Hyundai Unicorns leading the league in ERA (3.01) and finishing 3rd in wins with 13.
