Philadelphia Union downs Isles

(Harrisburg, PA) On Thursday, August 28th the Harrisburg City Islanders took on their Major League Soccer affiliate, the Philadelphia Union, in a friendly. Although the Union bested the Isles 2-3, the match was full of intense play-making from both sides and made for an exciting match.

The first half was full of extremely physical play from both sides. With a total of 13 fouls, it was apparent that although it was a friendly, both teams were determined to win. Philadelphia bested the Isles in the first half, outscoring their USL PRO affiliate 2-1. The aggressive offense was apparent right from the beginning after a header from Union defender Austin Berry was sent toward the net but ricocheted off the left post. The Union took the lead early in the 13th minute with a goal from midfielder Sebastien Le Toux with the assist going to Brian Brown.

The Islanders looked to find an equalizer; one attempt came from Morgan Langley in the 18th minute with a shot and a miss. In the 22nd minute, Jose Barril tied things up with an unassisted long-range shot that found the back of the net. As the half came to a close, the Union took the 2-1 lead after Leo Fernandez scored after a well-timed dish from Daniel Cruz.

The Islanders got things rolling in the second half with hopes of a victory over the MLS opponent. In the 50th minute, midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin found some space behind the defense, but his lay off attempt was deflected out of play. In the 51st, Bauque fired a shot from just inside 10 yards, but Zac MacMath knocked it away.

Soon after, Bauque scored from outside the box in the 55th minute assisted by Danny DiPrima to even up the score at 2-2. Things were fairly slow for both sides for a large portion of the half, each looking for a goal. The Union took the lead in the 75th with an unassisted goal from Fred. There was a late attempt from Islanders hopeful, Javaun Waugh, was shot over the net and into the deck. As the match came to a close, the Union took the 2-3 win.

The Islanders will return to Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday, August 30th to take on their close USL PRO opponent, the Rochester Rhinos at 7pm, doors open at 5:30pm. Don't miss out!
