Philadelphia Soul: Week 9 Game Preview

June 18, 2019 - Arena Football League (AFL) - Philadelphia Soul News Release

After wrapping up a three-game homestand with a 25-point victory over Atlantic City, the Philadelphia Soul (4-4) will travel to Columbus (1-7) to take on the Destroyers at Nationwide Arena Saturday night. Fans can watch live on NBC Sports Philadelphia+, ESPN3 or the ESPN app, or listen to the action on 97.5 The Fanatic.

Philadelphia is coming off arguably its most important win of the season, as the team clinched the tiebreaker over Atlantic City and moved into sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot with four games remaining. Quarterback Dan Raudabaugh completed 83.3% of his passes (15-18) in three quarters of work, his best completion percentage in a game since July of 2017, while fullback Adrian Ferns ran for three first-half scores.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the victory was the team's much-improved pass rush. The defensive line put pressure on Blackjacks' quarterbacks Randy Hippeard and Warren Smith Jr. all night, forcing a season-high three turnovers on downs and three sacks. They'll look to continue to apply pressure against a Columbus offensive line that has allowed 20 sacks, as many as the rest of the league combined.

Meanwhile, the Destroyers will wrap up a three-game homestand while looking for their second win of the season. Philadelphia is 7-4 all-time against Columbus, including a win in the teams' first meeting at the Wells Fargo Center. The Soul held the Destroyers top offensive weapon Fabian Guerra without a touchdown, while forcing four turnovers, including a pick-six, in the 47-35 victory in Week 6.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm on Saturday at Nationwide Arena.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

DL Thomas Dover

Dover recorded two sacks in the win over Atlantic City. He'll look to add to that total against a Columbus team that has allowed 20 sacks this season, twice as many as anyone else in the league.

WR Fabian Guerra

Averaging a league-leading 166.0 all-purpose yards per game, Guerra had 210 yards and two scores in last weekend's loss to Baltimore. However, the dangerous return man was held without a touchdown the last time these two teams played in Week 6.

BY THE NUMBERS

+45 The Soul have outscored opponents by 45 points in the third quarter of games this season. Meanwhile, they've posted a -30 point differential in the other three quarters combined.

4 The Soul have won four straight games over the Destroyers, including the teams' Week 6 meeting earlier this year.

-10 The Destroyers have posted a league-worst -10 turnover margin this season. Columbus turned the ball over four times in these teams' previous meeting, leading to 19 Soul points.
