Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
Boardman, Ohio -- Tonight the Youngstown Phantoms Junior-A hockey club got first-period goals from Chris Smith and Rob Rassey, and then held on for a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Soo Indians at The Ice Zone. The win enabled the second-place Phantoms (13-5-2, 28 points) to remain right on the heels of the USA National Team (15-5-0, 30 points) in the North Division of the North American Hockey League.
The Smith tally, which came at the 8:58-mark of the opening period, was the first goal of the game. Then Rassey registered his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 14:33 to give Youngstown a 2-0 lead. At that point, Soo goaltender Troy Redmann was removed from the game and his replacement -- Jason Kearney
-- blanked the Phantoms the rest of the way, stopping all 17 shots he faced. The only Indians' goal was scored by Glen Yliatalo at the 18:34-mark of the second period as Youngstown goaltender Tommy O'Brien stopped 27 shots and improved his personal record to 5-1-0.
Youngstown got back on the winning track tonight after coming out on the short end of overtime shootouts against the USA National Team (November 21) and the Toledo Ice Diggers (November 24) in its previous two games. Nonetheless, the Phantoms have now registered at least one point in the standings in nine of their last 10 contests. Youngstown and the Soo (7-10-2, 16 points) will meet again tomorrow (Saturday, November 27) at 7:00 p.m. at The Ice Zone. Tickets for that game -- and all Phantoms' home games -- are available by calling (330) 965-7500 or visiting The Ice Zone, which is located at 360 McClurg Road in Boardman. Tickets are also available at the door on game nights.
