Phantoms President Guarantees Win to Phans

April 22, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Toronto Phantoms News Release

Toronto, Ontario: Toronto Phantoms President & CEO Rob Godfrey is guaranteeing a win by his team in Thursday night's home opener with the Detroit Fury. The Phantoms and Fury will kick off at Air Canada Centre at 7:00 PM. If Toronto should lose this game, Godfrey says fans in attendance can redeem their tickets stubs for a free ticket to the Phantoms' May 23rd home date with the New Jersey Gladiators.

"Our sister organization, the Toronto Blue Jays, guaranteed a win to the fans of Toronto and the players certainly delivered", says Godfrey, referring to the Blue Jays 7-2 win over the Minnesota Twins in the club's home opener back on April 4th. "I think our players can do the same, particularly after seeing them take down one of the top teams in the league in their house." The Phantoms defeated the Tampa Bay Storm 51-37 in the club's season opener on Saturday in the Ice Palace.

Godfrey continued, "This is not to take anything away from the Fury. Detroit has an outstanding team with a great coach in former Argo Mouse Davis. I just firmly believe that we are going to send our Phantoms phans home with much more than just a bobble-head doll. We're going to give them a win!"

This will be the first meeting between Toronto and Detroit in AFL action. In 2001, both teams advanced to the playoffs. The Phantoms (relocated from Hartford) posted a record of 8-6 capturing the Eastern Division championship, while the expansion Fury compiled a 7-7 record in its first year of operations.

The Phantoms have a pair of special promotions planned for the second home opener in club history. The first 6000 phans to arrive will each receive a specially designed mini bobble-head doll. The first 10, 000 through the turnstiles will also get the Phantoms Big Ticket which includes a free Lower Bowl end zone ticket to the May 9th game with Indiana. The Big Ticket also includes special discounts to great attractions in the Toronto area.

Tickets for the Toronto Phantoms 2002 regular season home opener with the Detroit Fury (and the 6 regular season home games that follow) are now on sale and can be purchased by calling (416) 341-1234 or by logging on to torontophantoms.com.
