Phantoms Open Online Pre-Auction of Special Edition Jerseys
March 10, 2009 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
The Mahoning Valley Phantoms have opened their second online jersey pre-auction of the 2008-2009 season, that of their special edition St. Patrick's Day uniforms.
The jerseys are part of the Phantoms' yearly tradition of the St. Patrick's Day game, which falls directly on the March 17th holiday next week. Fans can bid right now on the uniforms before they go on live auction following the Tuesday contest with Team USA at the Chevrolet Centre.
"The Phantoms have designed and worn St Patrick's Day jerseys for the last few years," explains Team President Bruce J. Zoldan. "We are excited that once again this St Patrick's Day that the Phantoms will be wearing these newly designed game jerseys.
"The jersey auction has been a great success in past years as fans bid on these Special designed collectors jerseys with the names of future NHL stars on them."
The proceeds of the auction will be donated directly to the Phantom Fireworks Youth Hockey program at the Ice Zone in Boardman.
"Youth hockey is the future of the Valley's ultimate hockey success," says Zoldan, and the proceeds of the jersey auction will help to support the growth of hockey throughout our Valley."
Ice Zone Youth Hockey Director Rocky Russo says the money helps the program clear big financial hurdles.
"Hockey in the Valley is growing but it can be very expensive," acknowledges Russo. "Our St. Patrick's Day jersey auction has created an opportunity for the Phantom Fireworks Youth Hockey program to offset some of this cost.
"We utilize these funds to help create extra on-ice training sessions for our PFYH players. We also use our Phantom players as instructors during these events to tie the two events together."
This year's edition of the jerseys are white with a green version of the Phantoms logo inside a green shamrock embroidered onto the front; numbers and names are on the back in green. The bottom of the torso and the tops of the sleeves are trimmed in gold and dark green with light green shamrocks inset.
The choice of white as the primary color is a departure from previous St. Patrick's Day jerseys, which have been primarily green, making the 2009 uniforms a must-have for collectors.
The starting bid for each jersey is $150 and the Phantoms have made special preparations to handle phone bids for all fans who cannot be in attendance for Tuesday's game that would still like to bid on their favorite player's uniform.
