Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BOARDMAN, OH (Saturday, September 13th, 2008) - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms came up short in their preseason finale, losing 5-3 to Detroit's Motor City Machine at the Ice Zone in Boardman.
The teams traded goals throughout the game, but it was Jake Friedman's goal at 18:34 into the second period that ended up being the difference, putting Motor City up to stay.
The Phantoms outshot the Machine by a 36-20 margin but could not get enough past the combined goaltending of R.J. Heath and Joe Rogers in the exhibition contest. The Phantoms' goaltending duo of Jordan Tibbett and Garrett Bartus combined to save 15 shots in the loss.
Mahoning Valley got goals from Colin Lundholm, Christian Long and Trevor Shively.
Saturday's game marks the Phantoms' last game in the Valley before their home opener on October 24th against Team U.S.A.
The Phantoms now head to Minnesota for the Sherwood NAHL Showcase, where they open the season Wednesday at 4:15 PM against the Owatonna (MN) Express.
