Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release

Toledo, Ohio -- This afternoon the Youngstown Phantoms Junior-A hockey club reeled off its fourth straight victory, downing the Toledo Ice Diggers, 3-2, in an overtime shootout at the Team Toledo Ice House. Phantoms' goaltender Jerry Kuhn registered 32 saves during regulation and the overtime period, plus stopped all five Ice Diggers' shots during the shootout. Kyle Laughlin scored on Youngstown's fifth and final attempt of the shootout to lift his team to the victory. The Phantoms (10-4-0) have now won nine of their last 10 games and are a perfect 5-0-0 against the Ice Diggers (9-8-2) this season.

Youngstown built a 2-0 lead in the opening period today, getting a goal from Anthony Canzoneri at the 2:50-mark and a power-play tally by Aaron Rhyner at 13:54. However, Toledo fought back and tied the game on a pair of goals by Scott Zimmerman. The first came at the 17:47-mark of the first period and the equalizer was at 13:22 of the second period. The Phantoms beat the Ice Diggers at The Ice Zone in Boardman, 7-4, last night and scored 27 goals in four games against Toledo prior to today, but did not get one past goaltender Justin Marriott again until Laughlin's game-winner in the shootout. Today's contest marked the first time this season that a Youngstown game was not decided in regulation play.

"We had a real flat second period today, and we had to grind it out, but on the road we'll take it," Phantoms' Head Coach & General Manager Bob Mainhardt said. "The offense wasn't clicking like it has been, but we found a way to win."

Youngstown will return to action next weekend with a pair of games against NAHL North Division rival Cleveland. The Phantoms and the Barons will tangle on Saturday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 14 at 3:30 p.m. at Barons Arena in Cleveland.
