Perani Arena to be Home of Junior Hockey Team
June 16, 2010 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
ROCHESTER, MI--- The International Hockey League has been advised that the Perani Arena in Flint, Michigan has signed a lease with a junior hockey league team. The City of Flint had been home to professional hockey for 40 years, with the IHL's Generals making it to the Turner Cup Finals this past spring. The city was abuzz about the Generals' success, and a sellout crowd watched the fourth game of the best-of-seven series against Fort Wayne at Perani Arena.
Although the announcement had been rumored for a number of weeks, the news still came as an extreme disappointment to the IHL given the significant strides that had been made toward securing a team in Flint.
"We had an ownership group in place to keep pro hockey going in Flint, as we feel the market will support minor league pro hockey", said Dennis Hextall, IHL Commissioner. "With the affiliation between the IHL and CHL, there were great expectations regarding the upcoming season but due to circumstances beyond our control, it unfortunately appears that Flint will not be able to participate at this time."
The IHL and CHL announced an affiliation that starts this coming season that will see seventeen teams or more competing in the 2010-2011 season. The IHL is still in discussions which would bring at least one additional team into the League for the 2010-2011 season, and it expects to make an announcement regarding those efforts soon. The IHL and CHL will meet later this month in Las Vegas, Nevada to finalize many details of the arrangement between the two leagues. A schedule for the 2010-2011 season should be complete by mid July.
