Pensacola sweeps weekly awards

August 9, 2004 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release

Durham, N.C. -- Pensacola became the first Central Baseball League team this season to have both the Batter and Pitcher of the Week, as SportsTicker selected Rafael Alvarez and Jeff Norris, respectively, on Monday, Aug. 9, based upon their performances from Aug. 2 - 8. Alvarez and Norris are the third and fourth different Pelicans to nab weekly honors.

Alvarez went 13-for-23 for a .565 batting average and among those 13 hits were seven doubles and two home runs resulting in a slugging percentage of 1.130. In addition, he stole four bases, drove in eight runs and scored 10 times for the Pelicans, who lead the West Division by 7 1/2 games. Alvarez currently leads the CBL in batting average (.364), on-base percentage (.480) and slugging percentage (.707), and ranks third in hits (100) and extra-base hits (36). He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Minnesota Twins in 1994, making it as high as Triple-A Salt Lake City in 1997 and 1999. This is his first season with the Pelicans.

Norris earned the award after tossing a complete game and allowing one run on five hits in a 5-1 victory over San Angelo on Aug. 4. Also in that game, Norris struck out eight and walked none to improve to 6-0 and lower his earned run average to 3.22. Norris, who began the season as a reliever, has given up more than three runs in a start on only two occasions. He is in his first season with Pensacola, after spending the spring pitching for the University of Alabama.
