Pedro Mendes Scores NASL Goal of the Season

ATLANTA, Ga. (November 8, 2013) - An unstoppable long-distance shot by Pedro Mendes of the Atlanta Silverbacks has won the 2013 North American Soccer League Goal of the Season award selected by fans voting on www.NASL.com .

The 23-year-old Brazilian will line up for the Silverbacks against the New York Cosmos and his twin brother Paulo in NASL Soccer Bowl 2013 at 7.30pm ET on Saturday, live on ESPN3 and ESPN Deportes.

With his side trailing 3-1 away to the defending NASL champion Tampa Bay Rowdies during the NASL Spring season, Mendes caught Rowdies keeper Andrew Fontein off his line and blasted a superb 35-yard finish into the home net to pull Atlanta within a goal of tying the contest.

The goal by Mendes claimed 41 percent of the fan vote, with a dipping long range shot by Polish striker Tomasz Zahorski of the San Antonio Scorpions finishing second with 15 percent and a free kick by Neil Hlavaty of FC Edmonton third with 10 percent.

Mendes joined the Silverbacks from the Rhode Island Reds of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) midway through the 2012 season and injected pace and creativity into the Silverbacks lineup, scoring four goals in eight games. Mendes spent time with Silverbacks Technical Director Eric Wynalda at Cal FC, an amateur club that dispatched a pair of professional teams to make it all the way to the fourth round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
