PCL Names Players of the Week for June 11 - 17

Published on June 18, 2012 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - From June 11th to 17th, Mike Wilson of the Tacoma Rainiers and Tom Koehler of the New Orleans Zephyrs were the best players on the field, and today they were rewarded for their strong performances as the Pacific Coast League named them PCL Player and Pitcher of the Week for that period.

Wilson was on fire as he hit .500 in 6 games, accompanied by a .571 on-base percentage and 1.083 slugging percentage that included four home runs, all of which were best in the PCL. The outfielder collected 12 hits and 8 RBIs while leading the Rainiers to a 5-1 record in those games, including taking three out of four from the River Cats in Sacramento. Wilson had a hit in every game, including a four-hit night on Wednesday when he helped the Rainiers to a 14-10 win in Salt Lake with two home runs.

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Wilson was a second-round draft pick by the Seattle Mariners in 2001 out of Booker T. Washington High School. In 2009, he set a team record with eight spring training home runs, and in 2010 he hit 25 between AA and AAA. He made his MLB debut against the Baltimore Orioles on May 10th, 2011, collecting his first hit and RBI while also making an outfield assist on a throw to home. In 21 games with the Rainiers this season, Wilson is batting .297 with five home runs.

Koehler receives his award after two great starts last week in which he went 1-0. On Monday versus Oklahoma City, he went 7 innings, allowing two runs while striking out six without earning a decision. The right-hander then bested himself on Saturday in Memphis, throwing 7.2 innings of one-hit shutout ball while striking out ten Redbirds for the win. Koehler's 16 strikeouts were the second-most of the week, guaranteeing him the honor when combined with his 1.23 ERA and 0.55 WHIP.

Koehler, from Bronx, New York, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 18th round of the 2008 draft out of Stony Brook University. In 2010, he pitched for the Jacksonville Suns, winning the Southern League Pitcher of the Year award with a 16-2 record and 2.61 ERA with 145 strikeouts in 28 games. His 16 wins not only led the league, but was a Suns franchise record, as he was also selected to the All-Star team that season. In 2012 Koehler is 7-5 with a 3.10 ERA in 14 starts for the Zephyrs.
