Pittsburgh Passion News Release
PITTSBURGH-Pittsburgh's first women's football team, the Pittsburgh Passion, will kick off its inaugural season with a scrimmage against division rivals, the DC Divas, on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at the James Weir Stadium, Belle Vernon Area Schools in Belle Vernon, PA. Die-hard Western Pennsylvania football fans won't have to wait until the fall to watch local professional football.
These tenacious gals of the gridiron are fit, focused and ready for action. A "Meet and Greet" will follow the scrimmage so that fans can meet the players and learn about the team.
Meet players like Bunny Dorsett, a running back from Aliquippa following in her uncle Tony's footsteps. Michele Halleran, from North Versailles is a first string wide receiver who also happens to be hearing impaired. Her interpreter uses sign language to call in the plays from the sidelines. Teresa Conn is a 5'2," 102 lb. defensive back and captain who travels from Erie, PA for the love of the game.
Passion owners, Linda Cole and Debra Ziegler, are committed to a family friendly atmosphere with accessible players and affordable pricing. "We'd like to encourage families to take Route 51 to family fun and make a day out of it," says Ziegler. Admittance to the scrimmage will be $2.00 per person. Children under five will be admitted free.
The Pittsburgh Passion is a member of the National Women's Football Association (NWFA), a league founded in 2000, which now claims the title of the world's largest full contact football league with 30 teams to date. The Passion plays in the Mid-Atlantic Division with the Baltimore Burn, the DC Divas, the Columbus Flames and the Erie Illusion.
