PASL Weekly - Week Fifteen

Published on February 3, 2009 under Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

Bernie's Record Night

2/3/09 - When you're a brand new league it's not uncommon for records to fall regularly.

On November 30, Mark Cromie was the first PASL-Pro player to score five goals in a game. Then four more players equaled the mark. Now there's a new mark to chase.

Bernie Lilavois wears two hats as a player and a coach for the Stockton Cougars. On Wednesday, Lilavois had two hat tricks, setting a new league record with six goals in their 13-6 win over the Wenatchee Fire. He added an assist to finish just one point back of Elvir Kafedzic's record of eight points.

PASL-Pro League Action

The top four teams in the league all won this week. Stockton reduced its magic number to clinch the Western Division to four with their win over Wenatchee. Cincinnati lowered their magic number to four in the Eastern Division by besting Springfield 5-1.

St. Louis stayed in the Eastern race by pulling out a dramatic 6-5 overtime win over Cincinnati. The Illusion blew two leads in the last minute of regulation, but walked away winners after Roger Gemoules's goal.

The Denver Dynamite kept their slimming playoff hopes alive by beating their fiercest rival Colorado, 9-6 on Saturday.

Sounders Super Search

Junior Garcia made it to the final two of the Sounder Super Search, but lost out to Vincent Oliveira in the finals. Garcia, the Wenatchee Fire's leading scorer, is expected to remain with the Fire.

Jeff Henderson, 1790 Cincinnati

It was a heartbreaking loss, but 1790 came the closest yet to beating St. Louis at The Game Arena. Henderson tried to stave off defeat by scoring the tying goal with 57 seconds left. After Elvir Kafedzic scored for St. Louis 18 seconds later, Henderson tied the score again with three seconds left in regulation. In addition to his offensive contributions, Henderson leads the PASL-Pro in blocked shots.

The Week Ahead

Stockton took one on the chin for the second time in four games. After losing 16-7 in St. Louis they appeared to be on a roll again, beating Texas 16-4 and Wenatchee 13-6. Then they got to Monterrey and laid an egg, losing 17-3. Thursday they are back home with an opportunity for revenge against the visiting La Raza.
