PASL Weekly - Week 9
January 4, 2012 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release
Cesar Romero is No Joker
1/4/12 - Cesar Romero of Revolucion Tijuana has a resume of two career PASL games. That's all the time it took to write his name in the PASL record books with a performance that is unlikely to be duplicated (or bested) any time soon.
Until Friday, Romero was just a guy who shared a name with the actor who played The Joker on the TV Batman series. That was before he scored nine goals against the Turlock Express to break the PASL record for goals in a game. The old record, which stood for over two years, was seven, set by Jay Hamilton and equaled this year by Kraig Chiles.
The surprising twist, however, is that Tijuana not only did not win Friday's game, but were blown out 17-11. While Romero scored nine of Tijuana's 11 goals, Turlock got goals from 10 different players, including three hat tricks.
Tijuana trails Anaheim by a half game for the final Western Division playoff spot, but they have also been hampered by visa delays which has left them shorthanded on the road. In fact, Revolucion beat Turlock in Tijuana earlier this season 15-3. The visa issues are expected to be resolved in time for this weekend's game at Anaheim. Having their full complement of players, along with the infusion of Romero, could give Tijuana the inside track for the final playoff spot.
Player of the Week
Cesar Romero, Revolucion Tijuana
The 22 year old phenomenon who scored nine goals in a game last week is no fluke according to Tijuana Head Coach Joe Pollard. Romero had a hat trick in the second quarter and four goals in the fourth quarter, and scored the last six Tijuana goals of the game. Romero recently completed a season with Murcielagos FC of the Mexican Second Division.
Kick Starters - Conversations you should be having about the PASL
Turlock 6-0 at home
The upstart Turlock Express solidified their playoff standing with a 17-11 win over Tijuana Friday. Turlock (7-3) is 6-0 at home. The bad news is four of their last six games are on the road. Turlock, which got goals from 10 different players Friday, has a balanced attack that features nine players with five or more goals this season. The Express will finish with two games each against San Diego, Tijuana, and Phoenix.
Eller, Sarkodie Lead Kings
Allen Eller scored the first three goals of the game and Cincinnati broke out to a 9-3 win over the Louisville Lightning. Eller finished with four goals and Kwame Sarkodie had two goals and two assists. Eight minutes into the third quarter the Kings only led 2-0, but the floodgates opened after Eller's third goal.
Sockers Perfect 2011
San Diego will play eight games this month, but if they lose one of them 2012 will already be a worse year than 2011. The Sockers finished the 2011 calendar year 18-0 in regular season, playoff, and US Open action.
US Open Action
The Sockers beat Las Vegas Select 9-4 to advance to the Round of 16 in the US Open Arena Soccer Championship. The Kings advanced to the Quarterfinals with their home win against Louisville, which also doubled as a US Open game. Cincinnati advances despite losing their three previous games against the Lightning this year.
