Victorious Vortex Finally Set to Open in Canton
12/30/09 - The Ohio Vortex won for the first time in franchise history, derailing the 1790 Cincinnati Express 9-6 in their final game in Cleveland's Ohio MultiPlex.
The Vortex are eager to make their season debut at their permanent home on Saturday when they bring indoor soccer back to the Canton Civic Center for the first time in 13 years. A city contract dispute forced the Vortex to make temporary arrangements for their first three home games.
All five of their remaining 2009/10 home games will be played this month at the Civic Center and team officials are expecting strong turnouts. As part of their business plan the Vortex have enlisted local charities to help promote the games and 85% of the ticket proceeds will be distributed to charity.
After an 0-3 start, the Vortex signed veteran defender Wes Sechrist and may not be done adding veterans to their young nucleus. Now at 1-3 they need to make hay at home because their last seven regular season games are on the road.
PASL-Pro Game Action
This weekend saw a light holiday schedule with the action taking place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The San Diego Sockers played their own developmental team in a US Open elimination game and the Sockers nearly blew an 8-0 halftime lead. The Fusion scored six unanswered goals before the PASL-Pro's top team regained their footing and closed out a 10-6 win. The Sockers advanced to the US Open Quarterfinals where they will meet the Estadio Azteca All-Stars.
On Tuesday the Denver Dynamite advanced to the US Open Quarterfinals with an 8-4 win over the unaffiliated Colorado Springs Cavaliers. Denver will play Vitesse Dallas who upset the Texas Outlaws on December 20 as the Outlaws opted to rest most of their best players for league play.
Wednesday saw the St. Louis Illusion eliminate their farm team, trampling Piasa 9-3. They will face the Kansas City Kings in the next round of the US Open.
The Sockers improved to 7-0 with an impressive 13-6 win over Revolucion Tijuana. The score was just 6-4 after three quarters, but the Sockers offense clicked for seven goals in a ten minute span in the final frame.
