PASL-Pro Weekly - Week 15

February 23, 2011 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

Waza, Stars Hold Serve

2/23/11 - The Detroit Waza and Tacoma Stars got key wins with the greatest of ease last weekend to stay in contention for a wild card run-off spot against the winner of the Frontier Division

Tacoma completed their regular season at 10-6 with a contentious 14-4 win over their longtime rival Wenatchee Fire. Greg Howes and Ian Weinberg had four goals each.

In Detroit the Waza slammed the hapless Ohio Vortex 16-3 behind five goals from Rodrigo Gonzalez and Costea Decu's six points. Detroit is 8-5 and controls its own destiny in its race to finish ahead of Tacoma.

Player of the Week

Greg Howes, Tacoma Stars

The player/coach of the Stars led his team to a 10-6 record in their first pro season since 1992. Howes MVP chances took a big hit when San Diego came to town and owned the Stars for two games, but he capped the season with a record-breaking performance. Howes torched Wenatchee for four goals and a league-record seven assists in Tacoma's 14-4 win. His 11 points is also a PASL-Pro single-game record.

The Scoring Sciclunas

The Waza torch holders, Dominic, Mario, and Tino Scicluna are already a rarity -- three brothers playing on the same pro team. But in what might be a first, all three brothers scored in the same game. In fact, they combined for three goals and six assists. The last goal was the most memorable. Dominic's bicycle kick goal and breakdance celebration has gone viral. Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPZzdCNofIM

Tragedy in Mexico

Details are still unclear, but three PPM Sidekicks players were killed in a van accident on Friday night. Edgardo Quezada, Jose Alberto "la Ratita" Chavez, and Ivan Medina were familiar opponents in the North American Championships and national team play and were looking forward to coming to Cincinnati with the Sidekicks for this year's tournament. The Sidekicks are still planning to participate and will compete in their memory.

Oh Canada

The Edmonton Drillers were thwarted at home in their attempt to clinch the CMISL title, losing to nemesis Calgary United 10-7. The Drillers, whose magic number is three, have to play in Stockton and San Diego this weekend, while Calgary entertains Kitsap for two games at home.

Wave of Cooperation

In a potentially historic interleague game, the Cincinnati Kings will travel to Milwaukee on March 2 to play the Milwaukee Wave of the MISL in a special exhibition game. It will surely be a good test for both teams as they look to fine tune their games for the playoffs of their respective leagues.

Easy as Piasa

The Illinois Piasa put themselves in the driver's seat in the Frontier Division. Kitsap finished 8-4 and Illinois improved to 8-3 with a big 11-8 upset victory in Louisville. The Piasa trailed in that game 6-3 before rallying for their signature win of the season. Now Illinois can clinch a date against Tacoma or Detroit by beating Ohio at home on Saturday. Ohio has lost a league record eight in a row and is 0-6 on the road. Illinois is 5-0 at home.

North American Championship in Cincinnati

Four of the six teams have already qualified, including Cincinnati, San Diego, La Raza de Guadalajara, and PPM Sidekicks del Estado de Mexico. Those four teams all qualified last year as well. The CMISL winner will join them and it will be either Edmonton (2009) or Calgary (2010) who have both qualified in the past. The 6th seed, however, will go to a newcomer. Detroit, Louisville, Illinois, and Kitsap are still mathematically viable candidates to take the last spot. The games will take place March 10-12 at Cincinnati Gardens and a weekend pass for all five games is only $25.

US Open Arena Soccer Championship

The Cincinnati Kings advanced to the Final of the US Open where they will meet the San Diego Sockers in San Diego on March 19. After not facing each other last year, the game on the 19th could be the fourth meeting of the season for the Eastern and Western Division champions. They have split two games and could face each other in the final of the North American Championship if both teams advance that far.
