Playoff Magic, Thy Number is One
2/18/10 - The races for the Eastern and Western Division titles and the playoff wild card berth are all down to a magic number of one.
Cincinnati can clinch the Eastern Division for the second straight year with a win Friday at second place Louisville. A loss by the Lightning would also put the California Cougars into the playoffs as the PASL-Pro wild card team.
San Diego can clinch the Western Division with a win in Tijuana on Friday.
California controls its own destiny. Even if Louisville wins Friday, the Cougars can clinch at home February 25 with a win over Edmonton. The only way Louisville can make the playoffs is by winning their last two games while California loses to Edmonton.
To win the Western Division the Cougars have to beat Edmonton and have San Diego lose their last three games.
PASL-Pro Game Action
Each division's top two teams played each other last weekend and both games were instant classics. Cincinnati beat Louisville 7-6 on OT before a franchise record crowd of 873 at Game Time Training Center. The Lightning never trailed in regulation, but lost leads of 3-0, 4-3, 5-4, and 6-5. After tying the game for the fourth time, Cincinnati only needed 14 seconds of sudden death before Garrett Buck scored to improve 1790's all-time home record to 15-0.
The Cougars hosted San Diego before a PASL-Pro season high crowd of 1,862 at Stockton Arena and came away with a 7-6 win via shootout. California staved off elimination when Jesus Molina smothered Kraig Chiles shootout attempt. Chiles had four goals in the game.
KICK STARTERS - Conversations you should be having about the PASL-Pro
San Diego, home of the 2010 North American Championships
The San Diego Sockers will host the playoffs on March 11-13 at Del Mar Arena. Three PASL-Pro teams, two Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido teams, and the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League champion will take part in a three day single elimination bracket.
Shootout
For the first time in PASL-Pro history two teams went to overtime and could not score in the 15 minute period. California, who led 5-2 at the half and then found the net only once in the next 45 minutes, beat San Diego 7-6 in SO with Antonio Sutton's shootout goal giving them a 2-1 edge in the three round shootout.
Division Symmetry
The Cougars were 0-3 against San Diego this year with all three games decided by one goal, two of those in overtime. The Sockers had a chance to clinch the division on the Cougars own home turf. Now a week later Cincinnati heads to Louisville with a 3-0 record head-to-head after three one-goal wins and two of those games went to overtime. Cincinnati has a chance to clinch the division at Louisville's home arena.
