Chillicothe Paints News Release
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, came out on top in a pitcher's duel at VA Memorial Stadium Thursday night, beating the REX 4-2 for their ninth-straight win.
Collin Hoffmann started for the Paints (11-7) and turned in his best outing of the season. The righthander struck out the first three batters of the ballgame and finished the night with a no decision after allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out six over 6 2/3 innings.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Cole Andrews drove a pitch over the foul pole in right field for a two-run, opposite-field home run, giving the Paints their first lead at 2-1.
The REX (9-9) tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Hoffmann retired the first two batters of the inning, but two hits and a walked loaded the bases, spelling the end of the night for the Paints' starter. Cal McAninch entered and gave up an infield hit that ricocheted off his foot, bringing home the tying run for the REX. McAninch retired the next batter to send the game to the bottom seventh tied at two.
Collin Luty hit a high fly ball to left to start the inning that got caught in the wind, which was blowing hard all night, turning a routine fly ball into a triple to lead off the inning. Justin McIntyre walked and then Parker Murdie popped out to third for the first out. With the infield in, Colin Shepherd hit a bouncer to first that was bobbled, allowing Luty to score, McIntyre to advance to second and Shepherd to reach first. That ended the night for REX starter Braydon Tucker. Jacob Frankel entered and induced a ground ball to shortstop that was mishandled, loading the bases with one out. Chris Eisel followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring McIntyre to give the Paints a 4-2 lead.
Tucker (0-1) finished the game as the tough-luck loser for the REX after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits, walking three and striking out four.
McAninch (2-0) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and finished as the winner after surrendering one hit and striking out one over 1 1/3 innings.
Nate Haugh collected his fourth save, he struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
After starting 2-7, Chillicothe has won a league-high nine games in a row and now sits in third place in the East Division, just one game back of the division-leading Danville Dans and Lafayette Aviators. The Paints are home against the REX again Friday at VA Memorial Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
