Chillicothe Paints News Release
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, opened the 2019 Prospect League Championship Series at home Saturday night at VA Memorial Stadium, losing the Cape Catfish 6-3.
Cape's Curtis Washington, Jr., put the Catfish up first with a solo home run in the top of the first inning.
Chillicothe tied the game in the bottom of the second on back-to-back doubles by Cole Andrews and Trey Smith.
With the game tied 1-1 in the fourth inning, Brady Cottom was hit by a pitch and Dalton Doyle walked with one out. Both runners advanced on a groundout by Zane Wallace. Christopher Jordan then grounded toward second base, where the ball was misplayed, allowing two runs to score unearned and giving the Catfish a 3-1 lead.
Cape made it 4-1 when Ellison Hanna II hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the fifth.
Chillicothe cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, this time taking advantage of two Cape errors. The first allowed Cody Orr to reach base because of a low throw to first by the Catfish third baseman. After a Gavin Homer double put runners at second and third, Andrews singled to left field, scoring Orr. On the play, the Cape left-fielder misplayed the ball, allowing Homer to score.
The Catfish were able to get those runs back in the top of the seventh. Cottom hit a triple off the right-field wall to drive home Andrew Keck, who reached earlier on an infield hit. Cottom scored on a groundout by Wallace, capping the scoring with the Catfish up 6-3.
Cape takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Game two is at Cape Girardeau's Capaha Field Monday night at 7:35 p.m. Eastern. Jack Raines is expected to start for Chillicothe.
