CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, snapped a five-game losing skid to the West Virginia Miners Tuesday night at VA Memorial Stadium with a 14 to 2 win in front of 1,529.
Chillicothe (22-14) got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first. After back-to-back walks put runners on, Dillon Dingler doubled to make it 2-0. Dudley Taw later walked with the bases loaded to plate Dingler.
The Miners (20-16) got a run back in the second, but the Paints answered with a run of their own on a Dingler sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 Chillicothe.
West Virginia scored a run-each in the third and fourth innings to cut the Paints lead to one at 4-3, but left the bases loaded.
The game was blown open in the bottom of the fifth with six runs. Andrew Czech singled to open the inning. Dudley Taw singled and Cole Heavilin was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Drew DeVine tripled to clear the bases and then scored on the play, as a relay throw to third went high and sailed into the third base dugout, making the score 8-4 in favor of Chillicothe. Dylan Carpenter was hit by a pitch and Dallas Hall hit a ball to third that was thrown wide of the bag at first, allowing Carpenter to score and Hall to advance to third. Chad Roberts then plated Hall with a groundout to shortstop to make the Chillicothe lead 10-3.
The Paints added on in the sixth. Czech doubled to start the inning. Heavilin then doubled with two outs to score Czech, putting the Paints up 11-3. Walks to DeVine and Carpenter loaded the bases for Hall, who walked to bring home another run to make it 12-3.
West Virginia was able to bring home a an unearned run in the seventh, but Taw hit a two-run home run in the bottom half to put the Paints up 14-4 and cap the scoring.
Zach Mehelich (3-2) earned the win as the game's most effective reliever, since the starter didn't qualify for the win. Mehelich allowed one unearned run on two hits over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Ross Thompson pitched the final three innings, walked one and struck out three to earn his first save of the year.
Dingler, Taw and DeVine each drove in three for the Paints.
Chillicothe, leading the East Division by two games, hosts Lafayette Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Some lucky fans will win free gas, courtesy of Valero on "Winning Wednesday".
