Pace-setting Galaxy Visit Admirals; Centurions Lead Chasing Pack
May 1, 2007 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release
THE 2007 NFL Europa season continues this weekend with the pace-setting Frankfurt Galaxy (3-0) looking to stay unbeaten as they visit an Amsterdam Admirals (1-2) team full of confidence after grabbing their first win of the new campaign last week.
The Galaxy will look to start a season 4-0 for the third time in club history. And if they do win in Amsterdam, they will be determined not to take their foot off the gas. On the previous two occasions when Frankfurt started a year 4-0 (1996 and 2002), they ended each campaign at 6-4 and failed to capture the World Bowl.
Leading the chasing pack behind the Galaxy is a Cologne Centurions (2-1) team that will play host to the Berlin Thunder (1-2) on Saturday evening. The Thunder may be glad to be back on the road - they were Week 1 winners in Düsseldorf but have since dropped consecutive home games in the German capital, losing to Hamburg and Amsterdam.
The third and final contest of Week 3 could prove to be a pivotal matchup for two 1-2 teams as the Hamburg Sea Devils (1-2) welcome the Rhein Fire (1-2) to AOL Arena. Both clubs have yet to grab a win at home this season yet have enjoyed success on their travels across Europe.

(Cover story Continued...)
After seeing his club fall to a second straight home loss, Berlin Thunder head coach JOHN ALLEN is not about to hit the panic button as he takes his team on the road to face the Cologne Centurions.
He says: "We will not flinch - we will continue to work and move forward. We're close. Whether we get to the World Bowl or not, I don't know, but I look for us to get better and better. All we can concentrate on is the next team on our schedule and the World Bowl will take care of itself."
Second-year head coach DAVID DUGGAN has guided his Centurions to a 2-1 start on the back of some tough defensive play and was impressed with his team's defeat of the Rhein Fire last weekend.
He says: "That was an excellent win against a strong football team. We overcame a lot of mistakes in the first half and that was a really huge win for the city of Cologne and the Cologne Centurions organization."
Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES has overseen his team's 3-0 start to the 2007 campaign but is determined to keep his players' feet on the ground.
"There are going to be ups and downs," he says. "You can't get too low when you have the downs and obviously you have to learn not to get too up when you enjoy the highs. That's just part of football."
Amsterdam Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS will feel better about his team's chances the rest of the way after they picked up a crucial, last-minute road win in Berlin last weekend.
He says: "I was extremely proud to see my guys hanging together and they played hard until the very end. But we did have a few too many penalties and we have to play smarter if we want to keep winning."
A pair of experienced coaches will go head to head when the Fire and Sea Devils clash on Sunday afternoon in Germany.
Hamburg's VINCE MARTINO, who has served as an assistant and now head coach in NFL Europa since 1991, believes his team is entering a critical stage of the season.
"I think it comes down to these next two games," he admits. "We have to win our two home games coming up and then we're 3-2 and we start to get out of the pack like we did when we won our second game. We're certainly not out of the World Bowl picture, by any means."
Rhein Fire head coach RICK LANTZ will call on every ounce of his experience garnered from more than 40 years in the coaching ranks as he looks to get his 1-2 team firing on all cylinders.
He says: "I'm extremely disappointed. We had planned to win and we prepared to win against Cologne. But it was one of those games where we couldn't quite get it done and that is disappointing."
Road clubs enjoy successful start but challenges lie ahead
PLAYING on the road continues to be the formula for success in NFL Europa this season as seven of the nine games played to date have been won by the away team.
Week 3 saw road wins for the Amsterdam Admirals (in Berlin) and Cologne Centurions (in Düsseldorf), while the Frankfurt Galaxy ran out home winners against the Hamburg Sea Devils.
By defeating Hamburg in Week 3 and Amsterdam on opening day, the Galaxy have produced the only two home wins of the 2007 season.
Every other club in the league has lost at least one home game and picked up at least one victory on the road.
But that could all change in Week 4 as the three road teams will have to overcome history as well as their opponents when the action begins this weekend.
The Berlin Thunder head to Cologne to play the hometown Centurions knowing they have never picked up a win in three attempts at RheinEnergieStadion, losing 25-7 in 2006, 23-17 in 2005 and 28-27 in 2004 (Berlin's only loss of that World Bowl-winning season).
The Rhein Fire head to Hamburg's AOL Arena having lost to the Sea Devils on two previous visits (13-10 in 2006 and 31-24 in 2005).
Frankfurt will meet the Admirals knowing they have won just three of 12 regular season trips to Amsterdam since 1995, emerging victorious in 1996, 1998 and, most recently, on June 1, 2002.
The Galaxy's nine regular season losses in Amsterdam have been by an average of 14.5 points, with the largest defeat coming by 38 points in 2005, when the Admirals romped to a 48-10 victory.
Hippler set to be true Centurion
GERMAN tight end WERNER HIPPLER will truly become a Centurion on Saturday night.
As well as playing for the Cologne Centurions against the Berlin Thunder, Hippler will make NFL Europa history by appearing in his 100th regular season game.
Hippler, who began his career with the Frankfurt Galaxy in 1995, is in his 11th NFLE season and a fourth campaign with the Centurions.
He marked his 99th appearance against the Rhein Fire last weekend by catching a 5-yard pass, giving him a total of 95 career receptions for 963 yards and three touchdowns. He won World Bowl rings in Frankfurt in 1995, 1999 and 2003.

Close encounters becoming the norm in 2007 NFLE campaign
IT may leave head coaches biting their fingernails or turning gray before their time, but the NFL Europa League's 2007 season is proving exciting for players and fans.
The opening three weeks of the new campaign have seen a host of evenly-matched games and tense, exciting finishes.
Of the nine games played to date, six have been decided by one score or less (8 points). The outcome of close games in NFL Europa can make or break a season.
Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES, who has guided his team to a 2-0 record in close games this season, says: "These games are closer than we want them to be right now but that is normal in NFL Europa. You seldom get room to breathe."
Fire head coach RICK LANTZ adds: "I've been saying this my whole time in the league - most of the games in NFL Europa come down to who makes the play at the very end."
Here is a look at the all-time records of existing teams in close games:
Team Record Win %
Frankfurt 49-35 .583
Cologne 12-9 .571
Amsterdam 34-31 .523
Berlin 23-22-1 .510
Rhein 33-35 .485
Hamburg 4-9-1 .321
And here is a look at the records of all six teams in close games this season:
Team Record Win %
Frankfurt 2-0 .1000
Cologne 2-1 .666
Amsterdam 1-1 .500
Rhein 1-1 .500
Berlin 0-1 .000
Hamburg 0-2 .000
Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS concludes: "These games in NFL Europa are so close and the teams so evenly-matched that it comes down to who can hang together and make the plays at the end."
With six close games in the first three weeks of the season, the 2007 campaign is on pace to surpass the 2006 total when 19 contests were decided by one score or less.
The record for most games decided by one score or less was set in 2004 (23 games).
Crowds continue to flock to games in record numbers
ANOTHER week in NFL Europa and yet another attendance record falls as crowds continue to flock to NFL Europa games.
When 29,091 fans packed into Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena last Saturday and another 21,347 attended the Rhein Fire's game against the Cologne Centurions at LTU arena, that meant a total of six games this season had drawn crowds in excess of 20,000.
That sets a new league record through three weeks as the previous best was four 20,000-plus games in the opening nine contests of the 1998 and 2003 seasons.
With huge crowds on display across the league, NFL Europa is on pace to set a new attendance record in 2007.
The opening nine games of the season have drawn an average of 23,715 fans. At that pace, the league record average of 18,965 (set in 2005) will be smashed.
Here is a look at the top five seasons in NFL Europa history in terms of average attendance, including the current 2007 campaign:
Season Avg Attendance
2007 (thru 3 weeks) 23,715
Speaking about playing in front of big crowds each weekend, Frankfurt Galaxy quarterback J.T. O'SULLIVAN says: "Life in Germany is great right now. We're 3-0 and we're feeling good."
National players make impact
INTERNATIONAL players from around the world made a huge impact in NFL Europa Week 3, particularly on the defensive side of the football.
Dutch linebacker AKWASI MENSAH, the youngest player in NFLE at the age of 20, earned Player of the Week honors for his 9-tackle effort against Berlin.
But he was not alone in producing a worthy effort last weekend.
Hamburg Sea Devils Mexican linebacker JONATHAN HURTADO recorded 9 tackles at Frankfurt, prompting head coach VINCE MARTINO to say: "Every time I looked on the field I saw (Jonathan) Hurtado making a tackle, getting up off a tackle or making a great play. He had an outstanding game."
French linebacker and reigning Defensive MVP PHILIPPE GARDENT continues to lead the Cologne Centurions defense. He recorded a team-high 7 tackles at Rhein and leads the club with 21 stops and 1 sack. Admirals Swedish linebacker CARL-JOHAN BJÖRK also had a strong week, recording 4 tackles and 1 sack.

Perfect start has Frankfurt on course for 'home' title game
WITH three weeks of the 2007 season completed, the Frankfurt Galaxy is sitting pretty on top of the NFL Europa standings with a 3-0 record.
If the NFL Europa League record book is an accurate indicator, starting a season with three straight wins usually results in a World Bowl berth.
Prior to this year, 15 teams have made 3-0 starts to a season and 12 of those clubs have made the most of a strong beginning by going on to reach World Bowl.
But before the Galaxy players and coaches begin making plans to extend their stay in Europe by a week, a word of warning: the last two seasons have seen teams open with 3-0 records and miss out on a berth in the title game (2006 Rhein Fire and 2005 Cologne Centurions). The only other team in league history to open with a 3-0 mark and miss out on World Bowl was the 2002 Frankfurt Galaxy.
Here is a look at how teams starting a season 3-0 have fared from 1991-2006:
Year Team Fared
2006 Rhein 6-4, missed World Bowl - streak to 4-0
2005 Cologne 6-4, missed World Bowl - streak to 3-0
2004 Berlin 9-1, won World Bowl - streak to 5-0
2004 Frankfurt 7-3, lost World Bowl - streak to 3-0
2003 Frankfurt 6-4, won World Bowl - streak to 3-0
2002 Frankfurt 6-4, missed World Bowl - streak to 4-0
2001 Barcelona 8-2, lost World Bowl - streak to 4-0
1999 Barcelona 7-3, lost World Bowl - streak to 3-0
1998 Rhein 7-3, won World Bowl - streak to 6-0
1996 Scotland 7-3, won World Bowl - streak to 3-0
1996 Frankfurt 6-4, lost World Bowl - streak to 4-0
1995 Amsterdam 9-1, lost World Bowl - streak to 7-0
1992 Sacramento 8-2, won World Bowl - streak to 3-0
1991 London 9-1, won World Bowl - streak to 9-0
1991 Barcelona 8-2, lost World Bowl - streak to 4-0
Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES will be glad to hear that his players are not about to rest on their laurels despite making the perfect start to the season.
They certainly feel there is room for improvement, as quarterback J.T. O'SULLIVAN explains: "We need to go to work every day with the mindset of getting better. We have left some points out there on the field. We're looking to become more consistent."
Linebacker MATT SINCLAIR adds: "We have a great group of guys and we are self-motivators. We just have to keep our emotions high and that will be contagious."
NFLE FACTS:Protect the Ball
The Frankfurt Galaxy continues to lead NFLE not only in the standings but also in turnover ratio (+4). The Galaxy has come up with 8 takeaways (6 interceptions, 2 fumbles) and given the football away just 4 times (2 interceptions, 2 fumbles).
Many happy returns for NFL Europa League veterans
THE opening three weeks of the 2007 NFL Europa season have seen returning veterans make big plays across the league.
A host of players have taken advantage of being on familiar ground, including Frankfurt Galaxy QB J.T. O'SULLIVAN (Chicago Bears) who leads the league with a passer rating of 107.0 having thrown for 526 yards and 4 touchdowns while guiding his team to a 3-0 start.
Hamburg Sea Devils quarterback CASEY BRAMLET (Washington Redskins), who played in NFLE in 2005, ranks second in the league with a passer rating of 87.8. He has thrown for 514 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Three returning wide receivers have made a huge impact for their respective clubs in the season's opening three weeks.
SKYLER FULTON, an All-NFLE selection for the Amsterdam Admirals in 2006, ranks second in the league with 14 receptions for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns, while RICH MUSINSKI, who is in his second consecutive season with the Berlin Thunder, ranks second in receiving yards having caught 13 passes for 228 yards and 2 scores.
AARON HOSACK, who is in his third season with the Galaxy, has made an explosive start to the 2007 campaign, catching 4 passes for 179 yards (44.8 average) and 3 touchdowns.
There are also returning playmakers on the defensive side of the football, including Berlin Thunder defensive tackle WALTER CURRY (Jacksonville Jaguars), who jointly leads the league with 2.5 sacks.
Second-year cornerback ABRAHAM ELIMIMIAN leads the Amsterdam Admirals with 16 tackles, while third-year linebacker DERRICK BALLARD has registered 13 tackles and forced 1 fumble.
Frankfurt Galaxy second-year linebacker MATT SINCLAIR leads his defense with 20 tackles and also produced a game-winning interception at Cologne in Week 2.
Hamburg Sea Devils third-year safety SHAWN MAYER has notched 12 tackles and 1 interception through the opening three weeks of the season.
NFLE FACTS:Missed Chances
Berlin may have lost to Amsterdam on a last-minute touchdown pass in Week 3 but they can point to several first half opportunities that were wasted as a reason for the loss. Berlin began their first half possessions on Amsterdam's 10 and 37-yard lines and on their own 23, 36, 40 and 26. Those drives ended with an interception, a missed FG, a lost fumble, turnover on downs (twice) and a punt.
