Open Cup Third Round scenarios set

June 11, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

CHICAGO, IL -- U.S. Soccer has announced the third round possible pairings for the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Results from the second round of play on June 16 will determine the matchups and venues for the third round to take place on June 30.

The Second Round matches were paired with the incoming Major League Soccer clubs, who will be making their 2009 tournament debut in the Third Round. The Chicago Fire, Chivas USA, Columbus Crew, Houston Dynamo, Kansas City Wizards and New England Revolution were automatic entrants based on 2008 MLS results. The Seattle Sounders and defending tournament champion DC United qualified via play-in matches against other MLS opposition.

At least three USL clubs will play host to MLS teams in the Third Round with Chicago, Chivas USA and Houston set to travel. New England and DC United will host their matches.

The Second Round of play includes eight teams from the United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1), four from the USL Second Division (USL-2), and three clubs from the Premier Development League (PDL); only one side from the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) remains to fill out the 16-team bracket.
