Oklahoma City Comets News Release
The Oklahoma RedHawks opened a brief three-game homestand with the New Orleans Zephyrs with a 12-3 win at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks scored in each of the first five innings to back Dustin Nippert in the victory.
Oklahoma got on the board with a four-run first inning off New Orleans starter Ruddy Lugo. Jason Ellison doubled, Joaquin Arias singled, and Lugo walked Nelson Cruz to load the bases. Nate Gold followed with a walk to bring home the first RedHawk run of the game. John Mayberry followed with his first sacrifice fly for Oklahoma, Ryan Roberts and Travis Metcalf each singled, and all three received runs batted in for their efforts.
Cruz hit a solo home run with one out in the second, Taylor Teagarden hit his first home run for the RedHawks in the third, and Cruz hit his second homer of the game in the fourth to help extend the RedHawks lead to 8-0. Oklahoma added four runs in the fifth to cap the run support for Nippert. New Orleans managed one run in the fifth and two in the sixth against Nippert (2-0), making his fourth rehab start while on the Rangers disabled list.
Lugo (3-2) took the loss for the Zephyrs, who have lost four of their last five.
Five different RedHawks had multi-hit games, paced by three hit games from Metcalf and Roberts. Cruz drove in three runs, while Gold brought home four. The RedHawks 12 runs were the third most the team has scored this season and falls a day after Oklahoma was shutout by Memphis.
The RedHawks and Zephyrs play the second of this three game series Tuesday night at 7:05 pm.
